Most people on here know more about wine than most people.
My question is, would you rate yourself as within the top 20,000 of wine knowledgeable people worldwide?
Top 100,000? Top 1,000?
I know that the pleasure of wine is not something which lends itself to ranking but it’s also true, I aver, that everyone on here is in the top 1,000,000,000 wine knowledgeable people in the world.
Where would you rank yourself?
(Probably the most knowledgeable people have no use for this post.)
I don’t rank wine, so I’d certainly not rank myself.
Wine used to be my main hobby, but perhaps ranks 3rd these days. As such I used to have a geeky thirst for wine knowledge and experience. Whilst that degree of focus is now gone, there’s a lot absorbed over the years.
I know what wine is and I know what I like. Since that’s one better than my “knowledge” of art—where, to reverse the old saw—I know what art is, I just don’t know what I like, I figure with regard to wine, I’m doing as well as I need to and as well as I ever will. I have as little interest in ranking my knowledge of wine as I have of ranking artworks.
I would say I’m a novice in the wine world with not enough knowledge to rank myself, especially compared to those that have made a living out of it and are able to fully explore their wine passions. I like wine, I’m still learning what I like and what I don’t. I’m still having fun discovering new varietals and trying new wines that others love. But mostly I’ve learned a glass or two with good people is my favorite way to enjoy it.
On a Major League Baseball scale, high AA or low AAA.
Maybe AAA as a utility infielder who mostly hangs out in the dugout. A player who will never make the big league, good enough to be good company for a major leaguer.
Compared to people here, average.
Compared to the civilian population, a special ops ninja. (As we all are.)
For tasting, I can typically get world region (for the major regions,) grape, age +/- a year or two, and sometimes the label.
I’m lousy at knowing the who’s who and their backstories.
Ranking is difficult. I have a WSET 4 Diploma and have taken the SOM1 coursework and hope to finish it this year. Who knows what ranking that is? The most important part is tasting a lot of wine both good and bad, taking notes, and comparing. Does this make one more wine knowledgable?
It’s difficult to know what the collective knowledge is to make a comparison. As a general statement, I can say that I know more than most people outside the biz (with some notable exceptions) and less than most people inside the biz (with some notable exceptions). And given there are probably over 100k in the biz, that is a lot that know more than I do. But I did earn a Sommelier Certification (level 2), so there is that.
