How to pronounce St. Helena?

HELL nuh

Now that’s a pronunciation I’ve never heard, But most of my time in TX has been spent inside DFW lol,

Just plain ol “dee”. never “day” or “duh”.

Ah, I thought you were meaning to put emphasis on the de syllable. I’m used to hearing maybe a slight emphasis on the first syllable, but not by much.

Yes, in these parts it’s RO-dee-oh.

But to Al’s earlier point, we are a French-founded city with French names all over the place for cities, streets, etc. and we don’t pronounce any of them correctly, not that we do much better with place names borrowed from other languages.

Side note - Interesting that Chateau Montelena got the name by shortening Mount St Helena to Montelena…

So you’re telling us we’ve been pronouncing Montelena wrong all these years? It’s supposed to be Mount-eh-LEAN-ah!

And in SC, the sea island near Beaufort (BYOO-furt) is Saint HELL-uh-nuh.
Maybe this post belongs in the FL vs TX thread.
