I live Connecticut where the shipping window is opening up. I’m interested in a few bottles from retailers located in Miami where the weather is still very hot. By the time Miami is a reasonable temperature, the NorthEast is going to be in a deep freeze! I’m inclined to just have it shipped as late as I dare (mid-late Nov?), but this can be risky business!
What do you think? When is the best time to have these shipped?
November/December is probably fine, though Florida can still have periodic heat waves. The northeast doesn’t usually get the type of cold that will damage a wine until after the new year. But this is also why I try not to buy wine from Florida (I realize this doesn’t help you at this point…).
Imagine how hard it is to ship into the state, lol! I have cases waiting to be shipped once the weather window opens up, but it is a tricky dance, depending on where it is coming from. I have stuff coming from New York City, which is easy. Stuff from Chicago, California, and even Seattle. The West Coast shipments are very challenging.
As mentioned above, I wouldn’t worry too much about the cold.
13% alcohol will freeze at about 10 degrees F. And even then, it would have to be sustained for it to push corks. We shouldn’t see that in November/December here in the north east. Some of the Berserker Day shipments go out in February and cross some cold tundra sometimes. Never had an issue there either
Agree with Henry. You’ve got decent window later in the year. I know that. Sokolin on Long Island has a cold shipper for the summer months. My guess is that an experienced FL wine store that ships probably has the same… Ship on a Monday will a cool ship packaging that gets you out of FL to cooler regions north. Again Nov-Dec timeframe.
