How do you hold a wine glass?

  • By the base, Italian style(?)
  • By the stem
  • By the bowl

OK, this is the ultimate in wine geekiness, but I am wondering how Board Members hold a wine glass. I have to say that when I see somebody holding a wine glass by the bowl, ham-fisted style, I have to restrain myself from saying something.

Where’s the choice for drinking straight out of a bottle?

um . . . however I happen to grab it. Never by the bowl (except when using the “O”), but I just grab it to get it to my lips.

Is this a thing?

By the scruff of the neck

Possibly a mistake here in not allowing more than one choice. I realized that occasionally I do hold it by the base…

I hold it by the stem. It doesn’t bother me in the least how other people hold their stem. We’re just drinking wine, there’s no set right or wrong rules.

I guess so, although it still strikes me as a mistreatment of the wine to hold it by the bowl. Or at least not taking advantage of the architecture of the wine glass (why does it have that stem, if not to hold it there so as to avoid fingerprints and undue warming of the wine in the bowl?).

Still remember James Bond in Casino Royale on the train drinking the Angelus. Holding that glass like it was beer or whiskey, not to mention swigging (as opposed to sipping it). Not too hard to tell he was not into drinking vino…

There’s only one choice when you’re drinking from a Mason jar. That’s REAL Italian.

By the balls.

timing is everything. Sometimes by the stem or base. If there is no base upon which to swirl, or if I am trying to warm tone wine or swirl without a surface, I will cradle the bowl. It is a glass of liquid. Can’t think there is really only one way to hold it!

Do prefer for waiters not to have their fingers inside the bowl when serving though1

Holding by the base would seem to require more effort to not spill it. Seems less balanced unless you’re really paying close attention. I only hold the bowl when the wine is too cold.

Either the stem or the base. If standing around at a party, usually the base.

Usually by the stem; occasionally by the bowl to warm a wine that’s too cold. Holding by the base always seemed mildly pretentious to me. And with today’s bigger and bigger glasses, it’s actually dangerous.

Between my toes.

on tv hold by the bowl. Real wine drinkers by the stem

Mostly by the stem, but as I’m drinking a glass right now I notice that my fingers are definitely right at the base of the bowl, and forefinger curled around the bottom part of the bowl for stability.

Hysterical.

By the stem or base. If swirling, then the stem. I’m too clumsy to swirl holding the base.

is paper cup not an option?
