Bump for update
Spinning capsules and no leaking are signs that things possibly didn’t go completely wrong. That said I’ve had plenty of perfect looking wines that were cooked, and leaky corks with sticky capsules that had wonderful nectar underneath (yes, sweet German and Alsacian wines).
So you can’t conclude anything as a good scientist, but my guess is that the wines are not going to last very long even should they be good now.
Actually it was surprisingly cool for the bay area last week. Today (Aug 11) seemed decidedly hotter than last week. Not sure how the weather was across the country in the truck, but as you saw no signs of leakage, I would say that you got lucky. ![]()
Another update. One capsule didn’t spin (while all the others did), so I decided to open the bottle and see its condition. Sticky wine around the top, and under the capsule. Pretty sure I’m not going to accept the bottles, though I’m waiting for the wine to warm to room temp to get a better measure of the ullage.
Eric, where did you get that temperature expansion coefficient of 0.000414? I can’t match that up with anything I wind for wine, or even plain water.
The reference I used was Wine bottles are never completely filled: a small volume of air is …there are several other similar discussions. Wasn’t able to find a more ‘official’ reference than that tho.
