Second trip to France since moving to UK. Entertaining in-laws. Cult cab drinkers that just “found” Burgundy. Picked Pommard (father-in-law) and Meursault (mother-in-law). Problem is, I NEED some REALLY good recs.
Hoping to visit two or three a day…will be there on Friday (Oct. 3rd) & Saturday (Oct. 4). I should probably get going on making reservations.
Phil, others with more experience can chime in but it’s gonna be tough, maybe impossible getting appointments around harvest, especially on such short notice.
The French are generally not at their Domains on Saturday. For Friday I suggest you try contacting one of the large negociants in Beaune - i.e. Bouchard and see if you can accompany a tour with them. Then go to Meursault and have a paid tasting at terrasses de citeaux in the main square of Meursault and either snack there or book for lunch at the table of Olivier Leflaive in Puligny where they will take you through a guided tasting/lunch. Alternatively if your French language skills are good just drive to Pommard and visit the Domains that have bottles displayed outside and signs advertising wine for sale.
Ballot-Millot. A small estate but they do have Pommard, Volnay and Mersault in their stable. I’m ITB so I did visit with a small group of others ITB. It does say they accept appointments, though time of the year might be quite tough. Charles Ballot is a young (30-ish) and has been running his family’s estate. Maybe worth a shot.
