Help me identify this Brunello producer from a vague description

long shot, I know

The label is black. Gold letters. Producer at the top. In the middle of the label, a gold medallion, or circle, or sun…

Solaria?
Boring wines, yet another reminder to not buy no name Brunello (or perhaps no BdM other than Soldera)

Luce Brunello?

Actually producer isn’t on top for luce.

Sole del Poggio?

Thanks everyone for their suggestions. I don’t think we’ve hit it yet. I have a blurry pixellated pic that might help. I know this is a bit of a strange request but the short story is that I was scammed by a wine seller in Ravello, Italy. To tell you too much more reveals me for the dumbass I am, but figuring out what a certain wine is will help me in my quest.

it’s the wine on the left and right (same producer)- middle is something else.

Hi Kyle,

I don’t know is this applies, but there is a lot of fake Brunello out there. I see many examples here in Germany. Either very iffy cheap discounter type, or direct fakes.

I had a look here
http://www.consorziobrunellodimontalcino.it/index.php?lg=en&p=42

I found no matches to your pix.

Henry:
That is one cool website for anyone interested in Brunello. Many thanks. [cheers.gif]
Michael

Certain it’s a Brunello di Montalcino?

The one in the middle is definitely Ciacci Picolomini. The pair on either side seem to say “Taurasi” on the label, not “Brunello di Montalcino.”

It’s this:
d’Antiche Terre Taurasi

Thank you, Peter; strong work! It was the partial Taurasi that caught my eye.

Winery: D’Antiche Terre
Varietal: 100% Aglianico
Region: Campania, Italy

Well done, Peter.

Henry: can you please provide more info regarding the fakes? Thanks.

Hi - a BIG thanks to Peter and everyone else who chimed in and helped.

So a few weeks ago, I was on vacation and in a small wine store in Ravello. The owner was very nice and we tasted a lot of wines. Generous pours. Next thing you know I’m talked into buying some wine and shipping back to the States. This story must happen repeatedly all the time, but jeez, I should have known better. On the wine boards, I’m a bit of a n00b, but relative to the general vacationing population I am wine-knowedgable. The worst part is that I didn’t get great documentation - signed some stuff and off we went (did I mention we tasted a lot of wines with generous pours).

So I got WAY overcharged and the wines that showed up were NOT what I ordered. I’m claiming fraud with my credit card but I couldn’t even remember what I bought (told you this was going to be embarrassing). But I am 100% sure what showed up was different (and cheaper). It was the brunello I was looking for, so it’s the wine in the middle. We tried a few vintages which is why I thought it was the others, but the other bottle of the Piccolomini must be elsewhere.

Hi Carrie,

For me there seem to be at least a few different categories:

Brunellogate
Brunello is 100% Sangiovese Grosso, but for a while there was some blending going on: Brunellopoli - Wikipedia

Plain Old-fashioned fake bottles
There is far more Biondi_Santi out there than has ever been produced. Sort of like with 82 Mouton, etc.

Discount Brunello
Shows up here for for ~15€ or so. Very dodgy, and that is too much to pay to try.

What I originally meant was:

"In Ebay.de in the last 18 months, a dramatic increase of offers counterfeit Brunello di Montalcino and other expensive wines can be observed.

The characteristics of such a fake, the following:

  • Copied pink band (loop that attaches to the capsule). With real tears filling numbers are printed in counterfeits are photocopied and appear washed out.

  • Lack of insignia on the cap (only terms such as “Vini Pregiati” or similar, but no imprint “Brunello di Montalcino”, or no indication of the bottler).

  • Lack of numerical identification of the bottler on capsule, cork and label. Example: R.I. 5379 / SI (but not mandatory)

  • The specified on the labels Aziende (eg Cantine Etruria or Feudi Toscani) are on the list of producers Consorziobrunellodimontalcino.com unlocated.

  • Prices are per bottle in the segment under 15 euros at auction end.

Currently, 20 to thirty deals currently on Ebay. Barolo there are also discoverable under similar conditions with the same symptoms as the Brunello."
