Harpswell, Maine - Saturday December 9th

Date: 9 December 2023
Time: 5PM - ?
Venue: Cook’s Lobster House, Harpswell, Maine
Theme: Dry white wines from 2003 - 2013
Maximum # of tasters: 16
Maximum # of seats available: 14 (I’ll be there with Eileen)
Type of event: Charity auction and dinner, wine tasting

Long-winded explanation:
Every year Cook’s sponsors a charity auction for Harpswell Home Heating Assistance. Maine is the oldest state in the nation. Harpswell is the oldest town in Maine. Many retired people whose families have been here for centuries are pressed to both pay their taxes and stay warm. 100% of the proceeds from this auction go to home heating assistance. A minimum of 20% of food sales are donated, including lunch sales before the event begins. Many local providers donate foods and if you order those, 100% is donated. Most of the Cook’s staff donate their salaries and many donate their tips. This is Harpswell.
The evening begins with a silent auction. Local artists and craftspeople donate their work. Events are auctioned, usually including day sails, golf, lobster boat trips. Property owners sometimes donate off-season rentals (May, June, September, October). Restaurants and stores donate meals and gift certificates, and local brewers participate. Lobsters, oysters and other sea creatures are auctioned, as are many services.
I donate a small wall of wine… usually about 25 lots totaling ~240 bottles, in 6 and 12 packs, everyday drinkers, because that’s who comes to this event. Wines that retail at ~$15 - 30 go for ~$5 - 20. If this OL fills up I will raise the bar, donating more wine and putting up some Really Good Stuff, which unless you outbid each other will go for way under retail, because few of the locals drink wines like Pegau.
We wilI have our own long table and order like everybody else at the event. I normally prefer to limit OL tastings to a bottle per person, because I hate to waste wine. But on this occasion, leftovers will be passed to other guests (who will donate accordingly). I have ~12 wines to bring. If we do it in tastes of ~1 - 1.5 ounces, we could have another 6 - 12 wines. I’m willing to cut back what I bring if others want to step up. I’ll post what I have and if I need to cut back other attendees can suggest what I bring and what I leave out. If the event does not fill up, we could cut the number of wines and have more generous pours per wine.

Cook’s is not a gourmet destination, but what they do, they do very well. The lobster pound is literally next door. There are the usual alternatives, fresh and well prepared (haddock and other fish, steak, chicken, salads).

Accommodations are not hard to find here at this time of year. There’s a Best Western at 13 miles, nicer upscale digs are available in downtown Brunswick, 15 miles. Uber, Lyft and Brunswick Taxi exist. If you get no cell service, Cook’s does and also has a land line to order rides.

Questions? Post, e-mail or message me.
Sign-ups? Ditto

I will keep track of attendees and post who is coming, and when we hit the limit.

I really look forward to meeting many of you here.

Thank you!

Dan, if I can get up there then, I’d love to spend some money in a good cause.
Will follow up via message with my contact info.

I’m a Burg guy, so I will be hoping some fellow travelers show up and we can bid against each other on some Really Good Stuff

Dan, I’d be glad to contribute some good bottles to the table, though my whites are younger than that 2013 ceiling.

Best, Steve M

Hi Steve,

That would be great. I am the opposite of rigid when it comes to tastings, bring anything you want. I’ll update as I hear more.

Best,

Dan

OK, hoping to hear from some more board people.

Here is a list of wines I have available. As mentioned above, I am not rigid about this, let me know what you want to bring and let me know what you want me to open (it’s a lobster house, but I’m always looking for excuses to open old Pegau, including da Capo).

Here are the 2003 - 2013 whites I have:
2007 Domaine Defaix Chablis 1er Cru ‘Cotes de Lechet’

2005 Bouchard Beaune 1er Cru ‘du Chateau’

2007 Terrien Chardonnay Sonoma

2009 Domaine Doudet Grand Cru Corton Charlemagne

2010 Domaine Dublere Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Chenevottes’

2005 Domaine Weinzorn Riesling Grand Cru ‘Brand’

2010 Cave de Tain Hermitage Blanc ‘Grand Classique’

2012 Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine Pernand Vergelesses 1er Cru ‘Clos Berthet’ Monopole

2012 Domaine Duplessis Chablis 1er Cru ‘Montee de Tonnerre’

2013 Mount Eden Estate Chardonnay, Santa Cruz Mountains

2003 Mount Eden Estate Chardonnay, Santa Cruz Mountains

2009 Rhys Chardonnay ‘Alpine Vineyard’ Santa Cruz Mountains

2009 Rhys Chardonnay ‘Horseshoe Vineyard’ Santa Cruz Mountains

And these are supposed to be in the basement, but I need to hunt for them

2013 Doreau Meursault

2012 Goubard Mont-Avril

Come on folks, I’d be grateful if you would help me drink some of these.

Bump:

7 seats definitely filled, 2 more likely. I am happy with 12 - 16. I have plenty of friends who would be happy to join us but they are not wine people and I want an occasion to open some great stuff. My list of whites remains intact.

There are some hard-core red drinkers among the group, so I will be opening Pegau with bottle age (2012 and older).

Locals (defined as NY and north, or actually anywhere), please reply and say you’ll come.

Thank you.

update:

I came up with some more teenage white Burgundy:

1 2004 Moreau Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
1 2006 Michel Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir
1 2004 Matrot Meursault 1er Perrieres
1 2005 Niellon Chassgne les Champs-Gain
1 2004 Matrot Puligny 1er Les Chalumeaux
1 2007 Pillot Chassagne 1er Cru Les Vergers

Of course there is certainly a chance that premox could rear its head, but I’m hopeful that most or all of these could be good. The fills and colors look right.

Please chime in!

Dan Kravitz

We are now up to 12 people (including Scott Arndt who confirmed but has not gotten back to me in a while). So 2 - 4 seats available.

For the red drinkers, I’ve picked just two wines so far:
2000 Chateau Latour-Martillac
2000 Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Reservee
