Lunch in the City with friends. Nougatine is pretty special; the food is extremely good, and the service superb.
2021 Les Fremières
Very good, with plenty of acidity and a lovely perfume. A sweet slightly annoying.ball of red fruit appeared briefly on the palate, then gradually dissipated without becoming annoying. Fresh, lively and well balanced.
2021 Les Leiards
Pretty, with a slightly more opulent character, attractive red fruit and a longer finish. The fruit was generous, with an appealing texture and persistence.
Both are really good wines, with attractive fruit and considerable charm. However, they perhaps lack the concentration, intensity and complexity to suggest the potential for long-term ageing. Their appeal is more immediate, in their freshness, perfume and expression of red fruit, than in sheer power or depth.
Pricing
At around $100 a bottle, these are fairly priced for top-level Savigny-lès-Beaune. That seems reasonable for wines of this quality. The difficulty is justifying secondary-market prices of $800–$1,500. Whatever the attraction to collectors, those figures seem disproportionate to the wines themselves.
I was buying Vogue Musigny for less than the secondary market for these wines. Value is always tough to justify, but I think once you accept that some people will pay large amounts of money to drink something, and you put it into that context, then you have a basis for comparison.
I really enjoyed them, and I was happy to taste them. The freshness was its main attraction, and nobody at the table, or the two sommeliers were able to detect oak.
Hello Mark - thanks for your further comments regarding the second prices regarding the Vogue Musigny.
Subject is not style…and Style is not subject.
The secondary price for G.Gillet S-L-B village is closed to Vouge Msigny v.v.. So Gillet’s style is very pricey and not because the wine is from S.L.B. .
A couple of thoughts
There was no sign of house style. The two wines were completely different, which was for me, the biggest surprise. I really expected from the general hype, that that would be an overwhelming wine maker signature, and found none.
On pricing, both wines were on the list for around $395. That suggests, given three times markup, that the restaurant got them for around $130. Both prices are not outlandish. (Sorry we took the last bottles; they have the village Savigny on the list for a little less).
Wow…that is wonderful observation, for me at least.
I found it surprising … due to the comments posted by MChang with whom he reported that : his two best ( or most preferred ) wines were Vogue Musigny and G.Gillet during his latest Les Pauless Tasting .
