Guffens-Heynen Pouilly-Fuissé Croux et Petits-Croux

I just stumbled over some reviews by William Kelly who, more or less, went nuts over this wine that I have never heard of. Unfortunately, it ain’t cheap despite its allegedly weak geographic pedigree. Can anyone confirm or deny that it is outstanding? Worth seeking out?

I regret that GH wines are no longer the values they once were. WK has been heaping the praise. I have not had this specific wine you reference, but the GHs I’ve had recently have been fairly remarkable and over-achieve (at least for me, when I think of St. Veran or Pouilly Fuisse)

Got the 'ol perfect score right here, eh?

The wines are very good. Still available on a few restaurant lists at fair prices.

not sure where this idea came from. but this producer is consistently benchmark and makes a range from the appellation.

Haven’t had this cuvee, as only 3 bottles reach Denmark yearly. However, the other top cuvées from Guffens are not only good for their appellation, they rival the greatest whites from the ‘finer’ side of Burgundy - for me proven numerous times in blind tastings

Pretty common knowledge in regards to public opinion. It comes from years (decades, centuries?) of Mâconnais being considered inferior to both Côtes. Some people were always in the know but the slight increase in recognition for Mâcon wines is rather recent.

Whether we agree this is actually true is a whole different debate (or consensus).

Or whether, indeed, terroir is any longer relevant to white burgundy.

Hence my use of the word “allegedly.”

I don’t know if you’re subscribed to TWA, but if you are you can find more reasoning behind my point of view, and information about this particular vineyard, here: Robert Parker Wine Advocate - Unbiased Wine Reviews

interesting comment - do you mean that you can make excellent white burgundy anywhere or … something else?

Depends on your ability to source and at what price - the prices I see on WS are v high and probably not worth paying the tariff (imo), and this is from someone who loves GH wines.

Personally, I have always thought they overperformed for the price point, and while they’ve gone up in price, I think there’s still a case to be made that they are a relative value though no longer to the degree they once were (comment more generically referring to GH, not the particular wine in question).

Have I tasted this specific wine? yes - it is excellent, but at current prices goes beyond what I am willing to pay for a bottle of wine, so it really all depends on your frame of reference

I don’t really know, but I am struck by the reflection that I can’t think of a single Montrachet(obviously rare events but I’ve tried most over the years) as obviously outstanding as one of Arnaud Ente’s village lieu-dit Meursaults. In white burgundy producer long ago became the only really important quality consideration.

if this is true (and i understand the concept - so thanks for clarifying), do you feel this doesn’t apply to red burgundy as well? and further, most wines?

It does, but not nearly to the same extent; Chambertin from Rossignol-Trapet is likely to be quite a bit more exciting than Rousseau village Gevrey, The difference is probably that there is now tons of brilliant red burgundy while most white is in varying degrees rubbish, partly because of the weather but mostly because the recipe has been lost.

more fascinating! cannot really offer a valuable comment as my experience is quite different, but also likely far more limited. i’ll leave that notion to the experts. likely a ripe subject for its own thread…

A Jules Desjourneys Saint-Veran 2014 this evening is a pretty convincing argument for the unimportance of aristocratic lineage in contemporary white burgundy, a magnificent example.

I’ve been a big fan of their wines since about 1998. I consider them one of the best producers in the region. In the 2000’s they were fairly priced but hard to find. I visited the producer in 2015 and got to taste the range. Everything from them is highly recommended.
