We are thinking of renting a house for a few days near Dayton, OR and will be preparing several of our own meals there (as well as dinner out at Joel Palmer House). I did a web search for nearby grocery stores and found Safeway and Albertson’s fairly close by. Any preferences for good sources of fresh seafood, poultry, and produce to be utilized for a special meal? Looks like Big Table Farm has their own pigs and chickens on site, for example, but I don’t know if they are retail anything other than wine.
I think there is a Farmer’s Market in McMinnville but we may miss it due to arrival after the weekend.
Doug, I’m a huge detractor of both Safeway and Albertsons. There’s a Fred Meyer in Newberg, a WalMart in McMinnville and a Roth’s (never been) also in McMinnville. Fred Meyer is reliable for produce, less so for meat and seafood which varies from store to store. Carlton Farms in (duh) Carton has a fine selection of local pork but the packaging is fairly large. They also have frozen beef but I’ve never tried any.
Seafood is best at Fred Meyer (save Roth’s which, again, I don’t know) but it depends on the time of year. Winter months are dreadful and limited to frozen product which is pretty much the same everywhere. There may be smaller markets in McMinnville that will offer high-quality protein. I just don’t know about them.
Between Roth’s and Harvest Fresh (on Third St) you’ll find everything in McMinnville. Harvest Fresh is your basic organic natural food store and doesn’t have the depth of Roth’s but both do a good job in seafood and produce. Might give the seafood nod to Harvest Fresh most days. Mike
Kookoolan farms in Yamhill raises their own poultry, lamb, pork and beef. I just remembered that and the poultry is probably your only option because the rest of the stuff is by the half or quarter.
