Greece and Portugal- Need recs!

Starting to fill in the itinerary for our trip next summer.

Looking for recs (food or otherwise) for the following:

Santorini
Paros
Lisbon
Alentejo Region (some winery recs would be amazing)

Santorini.

If physically ok, do the walk between Fia and Oia.

If physically ok and staying in Oia, take the steps down to Ammoudi (spelling?) Bay (when there is some daylight) . Just watch out for the donkey poop. Take taxi back to Oia.

Evora is probably the marquee tourist town in the alentejo—amazing concentration of sites in a small university town. Origens restaurant there is very good. Also makes a fine base for exploring some surrounding villages.

I’ve stayed at both the big convent hotel outside of town and the historic Pousada right by the Roman Temple, and both are VERY cool.

We tasted at Adega do Monte Branco in nearby Estremoz and it’s a nice visit.

Best thing we did in Lisbon was the Red frog speakeasy. Followed closely by Taberna da Rua das Flores

We spent a couple of weeks in Portugal in the spring traveling from Porto to the Algarve.
Best meal was Pigmeu, on the western side of Lisbon, relaxed atmosphere, friendly and competent service, very good food and wine options. You’ll need to get an uber to get there.
Also Zum Zum Gastro Bar was fine.
I really enjoyed the Time Out food hall, lots of options, good vibes, and much fun. You don’t really go there for wine though.
I find the food culture level in Portugal as one step below Spain. It’s very meat centric in the hinterland casual restaurants. Even in Salema, a small village in the Algarve, locals were all eating large steaks and ignoring the beautiful seafood.

If ready to get a bit down 'n dirty with delicious, fresh shellfish and seafood, a meal at Cervejaria Ramiro is always a treat whenever we find ourselves in Lisbon.

We’ve eaten at the Paraskevas family’s Sunset Taverna in Ammoudi Bay (the northern tip of Santorini, below Oia) something like 50 times. When on Santorini, we go pretty much every other night.

Pro tip: never eat octopus on Santorini. The water is too deep and all octopus is frozen and from somewhere else.

Really on the octopus ??? I heard/read that the shrimp aren’t from there but not octopus . Oh well, stil tasted good.

Shrimp, octopus, and calamari are all frozen and from elsewhere.

Agree on this. We had a great meal there on our trip as well

We just visited Santorini in October as part of 2.5 week trip to a few islands (Crete and Milos). We were only on Santorini for four days.

A few places for food and wine:

Hotel: We stayed at the Perivolas Hotel (Oia area). Highly Recommend!

Food:
Perivolas Restaurant (Only open to hotel guest from what I understand. Great meal and very innovative Greek cooking - definitely not your traditional taverna food.)
To Psaraki - Opposite end of Oia. On the water/bay. Typical taverna food but with out the Fira/Oia prices.
Madame Sousou - Interior of the island with great views of the sunset. On hilltop/mountain. Get a table on the patio overlooking the island.
Roka Oia - Hole in the wall. Great food and small place.
Armeni Restaurant (Oia) - Didn’t get a chance to eat here but was recommended by a few of my family members.

Wine:
Estate Argyros - We tasted here. Nice facility. The Vin Santo’s are excellent.
Vassaltis and Santo Wines are two I would recommend tasting at as well.

Highly recommend a full or half day boat tour. Gives you some great perspective on the dramatic landscape of the island.

Went to Santorini, Paros, and Athens a year ago.

SANTORINI
RESTAURANTS:
Aktaion — beautiful sunset views; food was “good/fine” — not impressed with the food.

To Psaraki — gorgeous sunset views; simple, unassuming food preparations, and this is the type of restaurant that pulls that off with aplomb: excellent food, and highly recommended!

BREWERY:
Ftelos Brewery — LARGE, modern, building. We ate dinner here our first night, and all of us enjoyed our meals. Excellent beers, highlighted by the weird-but-good “wine beer” and also the Tomato Gose. We came back here during our three day stay. Highly recommended for the beer geeks, or anyone who wants a break from the local lagers.

WINERY VISITS:
Vassaltis — this was about a five minute drive from where we were staying. Thought it was good-not-great; highlights were the current release Aidani, and the 2018 Assyrtiko. Although I’m categorically-opposed to food pairings during wine tasting, I have to say theirs was very well-done. Worth a stop.

Art Space — very cool stop; unique, and interesting. Easily the best Greek whites we had on our weeklong vacation, although they are relatively expensive. Tasting pours were annoyingly small (maybe one ounce?), but whatever … Highly Recommended.


Couple quick notes on our two days in PAROS:

Our ferry (Sea Jets) from Athens had an on-time departure.

First night we drove to the restaurant Santa Pacou. Because it was dark, we did not get to enjoy what appears to be a nice view in the daytime. The food was good, but not good enough to merit the 30 min. one way drive from where we were staying on the southern end of the island.

The second night, we ate at Rada, and I would whole-heartedly recommend this restaurant. Both Ash and I started with a delicious cocktail. Then, for wine, we enjoyed a very nice Greek Viognier. We ordered the sea bass carpaccio (excellent), octopus starter (excellent), grilled greens starter (very good), chicken main (very good), and chicken pasta dish (good). The grilled greens and both chicken dishes would have benefited from a touch of salt or acid, but that’s a minor quibble. We loved the romantic/hip/beachy setting, and would without hesitation return if we ever find ourselves in Paros again.

Although we didn’t have time to eat there, Mario looks to be a good restaurant, and would have been our next reservation; only red flag is that it’s in the port, a location that I tend to associate with tourist traps. But – again – it does look good.

Lisbon - O Velho Eurico. Fun place, great food. It’s small, so make a reservation. If you show up on the day, you may not get a table.
