Had a burger at Squeeze Inn in Sacramento last week and it’s worth calling to the attention of others.
When you order a cheeseburger, they put the patty on the grill, put the cheese and bun on top of the patty, then put ice around everything and cover it with a lid so the bun steams as it cooks. It also gives you the skirt of cheese that you see. Top to bottom one of the better burgers I’ve had a long time, probably since the great Awful Awfuls at the Nugget in downtown Reno under the prior owner. Great bun, good quality cheese and vegetables and tasty meat.
The fries were just okay. It would be nirvana if they’d fry them in lard, but that’s probably too much to ask. I can’t remember now if they have shakes but I if they did I wish I had gotten one instead of a soda.
I got there about 10:30 a.m. and all the seats inside – maybe nine of them? – were taken, so I sat at the picnic tables out back with the flies and the car exhaust. I suspect trying to eat here during peak lunch hours is a bitch.

Wow, that’s an interesting technique. That cheese skirt isn’t pretty, but I bet it was delicious.
There’s something sort of silly about a place like that frying their fries in vegetable oil for health purposes. As if fries from vegetable oil are healthy? A meal like that is a total indulgence anyway-- they should focus on flavor and fry the fries in something tasty!
I had seen this place on TV and my neighbor used to be a regular … so I started making these myself at home. Still hope to make it up there someday … but for now I’ll live with my home version.
Thanks for the write up. That makes 1 more reason to go to Sacramento … so now there is 1 reason to go to Sacramento
Tonight I watched a few episodes of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Why I did that, I don’t know. Anyway,he showed this burger! There’s a burger place in Omaha that duplicated it and called it the Sacramento Burger.
Of course, he also visited a place that makes a pizza with tater tots, cheez whiz, and chili.
While there is a lot of repulsive material on that show, there a lot of place doing pretty admirable stuff. I recall seeing this burger. The best thing is not to watch Fieri hork all of this stuff down. The best stuff is obvious just from watching them prepare it.
If more vegetarians ate at Squeeze Inn in Sacramento, there’d be fewer vegetarians.
To Melissa’s original point, they should probably include an angiolplasty with the thing anyway, so I’m not sure how much more damage lard-fried fries would do.
Have you seen the reports that vegetable oil burns hotter and therefore kitchen fires caused by it are harder to put out and there were more burns in the kitchen?
