Good Insect Grabbing Refuge from Rain

We’re trying to move quickly to thin lateral shoots from our different varieties and tuck back any wayward shoots into the trellis wires. Later today I was working an alley between our chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon blocks and came across this wasp resting under a grape leaf canopy in the chardonnay. At first I thought it might be a cicada killer wasp but instead in matches up with the Northern Paper Wasp. Turns out this wasp is a voracious hunter and killer of caterpillars … That’s good in my book.

You’ve got to love the colors.

I reckon a caterpillar might be a nice meal for this hunter, as well.
