Go wide or go deep?

Judging from the thread by Jay Hack about mailing lists, I say pick up the slack and buy deep and wide from all the other Berserkers dropping like flies off a rotting stench of an old mailing list. You’ll probably be awarded some medal of eternal gratitude from the affected wineries!

Maybe, but as someone who enjoys your tasting notes, I thought this odd. I looked on CT and see 18 different wineries just since July 1. Lots of Carlisle, Novy and Copain, but lots of width too.

Also, the original post said that he was not worried about experimenting. He was trying to decide between his “favorite” wineries all coming at the same time. Not the same as buying Blaufrankish or Teroldego.

Wide. Just checked CT. I have an average of two bottles of each wine I own. I have 216 differed producers. Never a shortage. Unless you want Malbec or Pinot Grigio or White Zin. None of that.

Depends if you’ve already tasted the wines or you’re going in blind. If tasted- go deep, blind- wider dispersal.

I dont know how wide is wide enough for you but my width is between 12-14 producers for the last three years. I have tried to bring this in but it isnt really possible. Quite a few of these priducers make 5, 10 or more wines which helps broaden my width. So i go as deep as i can with the width/breadth i have especially right now 2012, 2013, 2014.

Stalker! Put the champagne aside and the odd bottles from Wine Bid this summer (like 20 year old Nalle zin). It’s pretty much 10 producers, and a few of those, such as Switchback Ridge is just petite, or Pisoni is just the estate PN. See, see, I told you. neener

Or do like some here: go wide, deep and far too long (and forget the housekeeping budget!)

Same here. I dropped most lists after about 20 years of the wine hobby. Haven’t added any since. Cellar’s pretty full so I’m not making trips to the local store to try new stuff either.

Most of the new styles/regions I try at this stage will be at a dinner where someone else brought it. If it’s really good, I’ll pick some up. Unless it means joining a new mailing list. In that case, I resolve to have dinner with them again. Or trade with them for a few bottles.

Go broke and go wide n deep

Wide on some, deep on a few. It’s nice to have variety, but it’s also really cool to follow a wine’s evolution over the course of many bottles over many years. I’d want to have that experience with at least a few bottlings.

For mailing lists, started going wide, found out what I liked and then went deep. Now cutting back a bit due to a full cellar and college tuition costs. On the other, trying to buy as many 2013 Zins as possible because they are so darned good!

Thanks,
Ed

Go wide and cherry pick. Granted, this does not provide many opportunities to follow the evolution of any one bottle, but I hold very few bottles older than about seven years anyway. For me, “wide” probably isn’t that wide to most around here - I only cellar about 120 or so bottles per year.
