Sorry, but just have to ask: Who has tasted these and thinks they are worth the $$$? The most expensive wine in Napa and I have yet to see a legitimate review that would in any way justify prices far above first growth Bordeaux.
Only 12 - 24 months ago Ghost Horse was just the butt of everyone’s jokes. Now people are happy to shell out $500 - $2500 a bottle in commerce corner??? How did this go from laughing stock to legitimate wine? If you prefer not to do it in the thread, please PM me with any tasting experience or other insight to show me how a brand new label is charging over 3k per bottle for some of their wines when vintages are being release (as far as I know) at the same time as other Napa Cabs.
I used to think Harlan was expensive, but $500 - $700 a glass? Where are they getting these grapes or what are they putting in this wine that makes it multiple time better (based on price) / different than anything else. What cooperage? What is the vineyard source that makes for a wine that is so much better than any other wine coming out of Napa. Enthusiast already say, for the most part, Napa/CA wines are way over priced. So how are people justifying this???
Sean, old story, but I will give it a kick…
Had a few (2001, 2005). Nice wines, especially the 2005, but would not pay the tariff. Few reasons but mainly it’s tough to justify anything when it goes much over a hundred these days.
Todd realizes this is the case for many, so Carrie & Randy now have that ‘lesser’ bottling ($100); Todd’s response to the economic downturn I guess.
The wines are very good - I tried a few at Berserkerfest 1 - I’d never, ever pay the price, but when the economy is good, and those who have it choose to buy, it sells. That was/is how the Napa market handled such an interesting and seemingly unnatural economic model.
Just had the 06 Ghost Horse Fantome at b’fest and it really was quite good. I appreciate Todd’s generosity for bringing some bottles for everyone to try.
Totally agree with Rob’s statement as the Fantome can definitely stand to the best juice from Napa. This is priced out of my league but if he is able to sell them, then more power to him.
Is a Mercedes Benz SLS AMG work the asking price? Is it a badazz and blazingly fast ride? Are they all already spoken for at the asking price?
The wines from The Todd are amazing and compete at or above any bar set in Napa IMNSHO. The market is there, as the wines sell. I cannot afford a single bottle, and I am not sure that if I could, I would.
I concur with Tyler; Having tasted these same wines Saturday I have to say that I was pretty impressed with what is in the bottle. I even mentioned to “The Todd” how most often hype exceeds whats in the bottle but in this case the hype very well might be justified.
Todd also mentioned to me that his uber expensive wines see 200% new oak which I thought was a pretty wild prospect.
The Todd’s idea with this label is that he’s giving selling a cult wine that he will back up with extraordinary customer service. He will bring you your wine and party with you, etc. Give you something that your high dollars should be commanding for the big money that you don’t get from the other cults. Fun dude to party with and as generous as they come. GH is his second gig since Conn Valley continues to be a great success.
Very good wines and clearly they are not priced for the average Joe. I forget whether he said he is carrying the Shadow $100 label forward or if that was a one off. Its the first and only time a Ghost Horse has been offered at retail. You have to go see him to buy it normally.
The over the top website clearly sent the wrong message to all those who haven’t hung out with the guy or would buy wines at those prices. I get what he’s doing now. Everyone has to decide for themselves whether it is all worth it or not.
