German Spatburgunder Master Thread

Wasenhaus - Spätburgunder 2022

Cherry, mixed berries, red fruit, floreal, green notes, light tomato, saline. Fresh and juicy, medium body, dusty, a little drying tannin, balanced and long lasting. Very nice already with a little air :wine_glass:

The vintages comes through and it’s has relatively more weight than a leaner year, nonetheless drinking very well. In addition darker cherries the trademark red berries flavors are there. balanced wine as usually, just that the tannins are more pronounced and time will do the wine more of a favor than most other vintages. Very good and crunchable despite its seriousness!

In more data fun…

Baden was the 7th most purchased Pinot Noir/SpatB in CT in 2024.

But places 88th overall in the Region+Variety rankings. This is behind Burgundy Aligtoté, ffs. Step it up people!

(OK, both are two orders of magnitude below California Cabernet. And yes, I am aware Region2Region isn’t really fair between Cali and Baden.)

Can you please do a 5 year trend on Mosel Pinot / Spatburgunder

I knew this was going to happen! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I started writing those queries as well. Then got pulled into actual work. I will generate those later.

Not expecting it to show much growth. I will bet money we see a big increase from 24 to 25!

I don’t place bets with people who can put their fingers on the scale!

Ask and ye shall receive …

eta - Mosel Pinot had the 2nd largest rank jump from 2023->2024. (Provence reds were first.)

Rank ordering by year in purchases for Mosel Pinot/SpatB

2024 300
2023 366
2022 377
2021 410
2020 470
2019 521

(Prior to 2019, the rank floated 480-550, but the differences between ranks was very marginal.)

For reference, Franken Pinot Silvaner

2024 311 312
2023 409 304
2022 393 302
2021 449 335
2020 503 354
2019 479 386

Since I am not just a data nerd but a drinker…

This is really succulent and beautiful. Very ripe but red fruits. Violets. A saline hint in the middle is gonna make this kill with my steak as I fuck around in the kitchen with Xmas baking.

And also this.

Honestly, not a fan. Banana notes and a slightly metalic finish detracted from a nicely red currant and fern core.

Bummer!

Wrapping up with these.

Enderle is very linear. I don’t like it but it has the most potential. More structured than a random 15 Rôtie I opened by accdient and gave to my wife Fruit had that beautiful distilled apsect of a GC. Insane dry down with fougere and yuzu genmaicha.

The Marebelous is a complete wine. Very attenuated and precise. Fruit is oddly fat and then collapses to singularity of black raspberry with a grapefruit peel bitters - like my utter fucking perfection. Finish gets flabby after I wrote that first line… but whatevs. There is mineral and umami here like a bowl of ramen in Trier. Like or not, this is insane Mosel shit. Def fuck you.vibe here.

Is what it is. Next bottle is another day !

Happened to open my first Enderle last night. I did not like it very much, it was drinkable but had an unpleasant earthy (not in a good way) note. Tonight, different story. Unpleasantness is gone, it’s a very nice glass of Pinot/Spatburgunder. Smells like Pinot should, decent but not overpowering acidity that makes the fruit taste more red than black, but I’m not seeing the big structure in this bottle, I’m feeling like this is a 3-5 year ager, not much more.

2019 Enderle & Moll Liaison

Pours out as a darkish plum-red claret.
Nice bouquet of rose, cinnamon, little dark cherry, raspberry and pomegranate.
Well balanced and harmonious, but somewhat muted on the palate. Slightly astringent with a bit stemmy, grippy tannins and a mineral tartness on the finish. Matches well with poultry.

2018 Keller Spatburgunder S

Very light, ripe fruit but low extraction. Oak finely balanced. Fresh and delicious and very Spatburgunder.

Can’t wait to hear about it all, though wished I would be able to attend :wine_glass: but as @Martin_Zwick, a difficult date to escape and leave the family behind
