German Spatburgunder Master Thread

Had a few 2018s and plenty more of previous vintages without any mouse issues ever (I’m quite sensitive).

If you guys are telling me, then I trust your opinion. It was eeeeever so slightly there — more a ‘nutty’ note than full blown mousiness.

Still impressed.

I’m happy to see you enjoyed it, and who knows, maybe there was something there. Just wanted to add the tasting points I have had over the years. And E&M have as far as I’m aware always used minimal SO2. However quite significant changes has taken place…

Aromatic very pretty. But it has actually also gained a bit more taste wise than I expected it would.

I tasted those three bottles of Rudolf Fürst’s 2022 Bürgstadter Spätburgunder. It’s a good wine, but more astringent than his 2022 Spätburgunder Tradition. I wish I could taste them side by side.

After work, I picked up some more wines, including a bottle of Holger Koch’s 2023 Spätburgunder Alte Reben (Edition Pinard de Picard) that aged for nine months in a 3,000-liter wooden cask.

As a follow-up to my previous post, the 2023 Spätburgunder Alte Reben from Holger Koch is showing well on the second day. I uncorked the bottle last night. At just under twelve euros, it’s a great value. Speaking of which, I’m glad to see that the 2022 Spätburgunder Tradition from Rudolf Fürst is back in stock.

Spent a few days in Burgundy last week and tasted so many incredible wines. So with a bit of trepidation I opened a bottle I hand carried back from Germany - 2017 Immich-Batterieberg Monteneubel

Whoa! Right out of the gate I realize my trepidation is unwarranted. This a beautiful bottle of wine. Well integrated oak. Balanced. Fantastic dark cherry fruits, a hint of earthiness, ethereal.

From Christoph Raffelt’s article on Mosel Pinot in Trink:

…in 2018 that I found myself drinking almost exclusively Pinot Noir. Mosel Pinot Noir. Sourced from Monteneubel, a 24-hectare vineyard located directly next to the Steffensberg. It sits in a side valley near Enkirch and is the oldest historically verifiable vineyard in the village. The 2010 magnum Kollmann poured into my glass was far from the first Mosel Pinot Noir (a.k.a Spätburgunder) I’d ever had. But it was, without a doubt, the best.

When Kollmann took over management of the winery in 2009, he found 2,500 square meters of Pinot Noir in Monteneubel. It was unclear when the vines had been planted, or even which clone material had been used, but the loose cluster and small-berried fruit suggests French clones

Same comment I made in the Chard thread - the trend for German Riesling is actually down year to year recently, so Spatburgunder is bucking the trend.

It is pretty impressive that the notes have double in 7-8 years. I love the CT stats!

I will post more details when we get to year-end. The Chard and Spat numbers were above prior year even with 20 days to go, so it was worth noting casually.

The trend pace on Riesling isn’t enough to catch up w/ an oddly high 2023 though. Prelim numbers:
