German Spatburgunder Master Thread

I could definitely see that with this wine. I am guessing it is the same for some of the high end whites that often are so tight upon opening.

My experience as well. Even the ‘lesser’ bottlings can age very well, as Robert’s note shows.
But I am partial to Ziereisen.

My experience with Ziereisen has been very hit and miss. If you open a bottle to soon, it will punish you for it. I had more or less undrinkable examples which I opened probably to young. I find it easier to find a good spot for his lesser reds, which can punch way above their class if you win the guessing game.

Great to hear that you will be able to get them more easily in the future. I can see the style appealing to fans of Burgundy. I know anecdotally that some very high quality producers in Burgundy like and drink Fürst wines - so there seems to be a mutual affinity.

Wanted to share this because I thought it was funny. There is a vending machine from a local wine merchant in my train station. They have Provence Rosé for the Partycrowd, and Pol Roger for your Champagne cravings at 2am, or Mosel Kabinett for train journeys you haven’t prepared for. Today I walked past it and saw this wine. Costs 21 euros, available literally anytime:

I see some good wines in there! Salwey Rose! Fritz Haag!

Where is this??

Freiburg, Germany. (Which also explains the Wasenhaus availability.)

Thanks. That is so cool!

That sort of vending machine should be everywhere!

But then again the discerning assortment would quickly be replaced with cheap QBA in blue bottles and delinquent alcoholic children will become more frequent.

Holy moly, I thought Germany is not capable anymore regarding „new directions/path“, but this is indeed such cool. With such machines, there is still hope for Germany. haha

I saw one in Zeltingen too. Wines inside weren’t up to much though.

'22 Liaison and Muschelkalk from Enderle & Moll just in.
Curious to try them but I’ll probably wait a bit and then open a liaison.

It’s impossible to write anything negative about 2020Carsten Saalwachter Spätburgunder Alte Reben

So happy you love it! He is a real talent.

I agree that it is good!

The only issue I had with them, seem to be that they need a lot of air young, else they can have a note that makes them feel kinda faulty. Not sure what it is, but I had multiple friends tell me different bottles seemed faulty as pop’n’pour… but with air they always cleaned themselves up. Did anyone have similar experiences?

I might have been lucky but this and 2019 and 2020 Hōllenberg have been marvelous after some exposure to air

Checking in on this after nine months. This time with high expectations. But wow, does it deliver!

This is next level Spätburgunder.
The nose is to die for and not unfamiliar for those that like Wasenhaus or some of the other new generation Spätburgundes. Floral, herbal, stemmy. The fruit profile is darker and more concentrated than a base Spätburgunder from Wasenhaus though. A lot of cherry fruit here. Concentrated, but it still feels light.

I am going looooong on these with the 2022 vintage!

Ridiculous quality at current prices.

I tried to find my notes on a Carsten Saalwächter Spätburgunder 2020 - nothing saved but if I recall correctly then something was off with that bottle, almost like a bit of oil came a long with the sealing of the cork. It was just a hint but off putting.

So I think this is different from what you had in mind.
Reminder to buy another and get a good sample!

I really need to try one of these! Russell is one of only two merchants that has a listing!

Russell just has an overall bad ass selection of wine!
