Congratulations.
I’m not a big fan of his show as it is a bit over the top for my style, but I like what he’s doing with the barriers and image of wine as a snobbish and elitist practice. Plus, more than anyone, he preaches the necessity for the individual to trust his or her own palate. I think he’s so succesful because his message has been a counterbalance for the point chasing that has become such a lucrative financial aspect of wine purchasing/collecting in the era of Parker/WS.
Good article. Captures GaryVee very well.
One thing which should have been included is that he is very accessible - incredible how many emails he can answer.
He once answered one of my comments from India - I think it was middle of the night over there at the time.
And I think he has instilled the enthusiasm in the staff at WL.
Way to go, Gary!
(btw, we’re still waiting for his Berserker-exclusive video he promised me…hint, hint)
Nice. I think I view, taste and score wine very differently than him but I still enjoy some of the shows. The blind episodes are particularly fun.
Jason
and I bet there is a run on that Jancis episode.
One of his best attributes is that even if he doesn’t like a wine, he is good at describing it in a way that helps others know if they will like the wine. He doesn’t automatically write it off just becase it doesn’t do it for him.
Gary V is a born genius at marketing and social networking–kudos to him!
Brilliant writing on Eric’s part, too–loved the writing style of the article.
I love the show and have watched it from the beginning and think he has made a real impact in the wine world.
But I really wish he would have taken an opportunity to “change the wine world” by taking a stronger stand in the Sierra Carche scandal.
Yes he offered refunds BUT what if we would have been more vocal and used his many media outlets to expose the scandal? I think this could have been a seminal moment in his career!
For those of you who haven’t checked it out:

Talk about an odd couple!
The video is done, we should have it to you shortly!
Eric was here almost all day when he wrote the article.
Kudos to Gary, a super sharp and super nice guy.

Gary is a good guy (there are not many in the wine business)

I enjoy an occasional show. I like his candor and his expansive use of desriptors.
Rightly or wrongly, I see the show as Gary trying to sell product. I can appreciate that sometimes he reviews wines not available at Wine Library, or he reviews older wines for the sake of educating his viewers. But mostly, I view his shows as an advanced form of “Staff Pick” shelf talkers. Which is to say, it is not a bad thing, but I tend to take a narrower view of his overall goal. Right now, he’s trying to move wines at Wine Library. Instead of (or, in addition to) writing up little reviews to place on a shelf, he broadcasts his reviews over the internet.
When I first saw Gary Vaynerchuks’ antics, I reacted with revulsion. It took me a bit of time to realize that Gary is speaking largely to a generation of people/wine drinkers/potential wine drinkers to whom people like Jancis, Parker, and even I, will not reach in full. His is the language and behavior that belongs to a certain generation and I came to realize that his appeal is not only broad but is also bringing a large group
“into wine”
I have met Gary, have even appeared on one of his “shows”. I like him thoroughly and respect what he is doing. As much, however, as he has a major impact on future wine drinkers, I would not consider him a “wine critic”. That is not an insult in any way. Simply a descriptor. And I do like Gary.
Best
Rogov
Yeah, but does he sell more wine than the Wine Enthusiast reviews?
btw - Who’s going to the “Super Tasting” on Oct 12 & 13th? I’ll be there Monday night.

Sure, ALL retailer comments should be taken with a grain of salt. BUT, a good retailer will not try to sell you wine that you won’t like. GV has panned wines that he sells, so I think he is reasonably objective, whether or not you agree with him.

Agreed, Gary has little problem panning a bad wine, whether or not he sells it. I think this can be a rare trait in wine retail. Posner is like that too, has no problem letting you know if a wine is shit or not.
