Frias Family Vineyard

In 1977 Manny Frias Sr. purchased 100 acres at the base of the iconic Spring Mountain District in Napa Valley. In 1985, five of those acres were planted, and FRIAS Family Vineyard was born. The first vintage was 1991, and since then, the vineyards have expanded to over 13 acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon. FRIAS also produces wines from single vineyards in Oakville and Yountville from families with whom they have long-standing relationships. Second-generation brothers Fernando & Manny Frias Jr. are now at the helm, and continue the quest for excellence with their family-owned and artisanal winery. Winemaker Todd Heth has been with the team since 2004 crafting these polished and powerful wines.

2022 Frias Family Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc -Sold Out

The grapes for this wine were hand selected from the vineyard blocks when they were harvested at full ripeness from later August into early September. They were carefully loaded into a pneumatic press and squeezed as whole clusters, yielding just the best juice. The juice was filled into aged French oak barrels and fermented slowly over about 40 days at low temperatures to retain all the fresh fruit and aromatics that come from the grapes. The wine then sat on the yeast lees while aging 4 months to develop a rich mouthfeel. The wine did not undergo malolactic fermentation and retains the crispness and fresh acidity important to Sauvignon Blanc. It was bottled in March 2023. 750ml, 14.2% ABV, 270 cases produced.

2019 Frias Family Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

'19 Napa Cab bottle shot

The grapes for this wine were hand selected from 3 different Napa Valley vineyards then harvested from several small sections, each at optimum ripeness. Hand sorted twice in the winery to make-sure only the best reached the fermentation tanks. Once in the tanks, the grapes sat cold for a few days developing color, flavor, and aroma before starting to ferment. The tanks were gently punched down and pumped over for 14 to 20 days to carefully extract all of the color, aroma and flavor from the grapes. Aged for 21 months in French oak barrels - 45% new. 750ml, 14.5% ABV, 400 cases produced.

2020 Block Five Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville) (Harvested before the Fires)

Everyone’s told you don’t buy the 2020 vintage from Napa. Here’s the exception…
The grapes for this wine were hand selected in the vineyard when they were harvested from a single block on September 25 well before the fires began on September 27th. Then hand sorted twice in the winery to make sure only the best reached the fermentation tank. Once in the tank, the grapes sat cold a few days developing color, flavor and aroma before starting to ferment. The tank was gently punched down and pumped over for 16 days to carefully extract all of the color, aroma and flavor from the grapes. The juice was then drained, and skins pressed before being filled into barrels. The wine finished a native malolactic fermentation in the barrels in about two months and was aged for 21 months in small French oak barrels (14% new) and bottled in July 2022. 750ml, 14.9% ABV, 348 cases produced.

Frias Family Vineyards

I was honored to be chosen as a “Newbie Taster” and was excited when given the opportunity to taste wines from a small Napa Valley producer in which I wasn’t familiar. I am always on the lookout for small production Napa wines that don’t break the bank!

Our group of six gathered on a Sunday evening in late December and tasted the wines over dinner with a second round after dinner. The Sauvignon Blanc was served on opening and a little below 55*, while red wines were decanted at 55* for about 75 minutes at room temp. Still had a nice chill at service. Wines weren’t served blind, but the vintage and cuvée names were not revealed until the end of the evening. The wines were opened four days after receiving, so not a Pobega, but not a full settle down period.

2022 Sauvignon Blanc
I’m not going to bury the lede here, this was the wine of the night. First time I’ve ever said that about an SB! Wine was wonderfully fresh and crisp. Acidity was right in line with what I like out of an SB and had none of the typical “cat pee” you get from this varietal. I suspect that is due to being picked at full ripeness.

The wine had notes of crisp pear and apple on the nose. The palate had a fully body, more reminiscent of a Chardonnay, and a nice finish. It paired beautifully with a salad of fresh greens, goat cheese, candied pecans and thinly sliced apples.

The three Cabernets were served side-by-side over the main course which was sliced tri-tip, mashed potatoes and crispy green beans.

2019 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
This was a very nice Cabernet and representative of what I expect from Napa. Very aromatic, without being cloying. The initial taste contained some more red fruit than spice. As it fleshed out over the night the fruit faded a bit and the baking spice came thru. I didn’t find the wine to be heavy, if anything a touch light with a medium weight. Very nice wine. There was a few ounces of this wine left that I enjoyed the next night and it was still going strong.

2019 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
The aromatics burst out of the decanter and glass on this wine. Classic Oakville dusty Cabernet nose. There was a little bit of sediment, which surprised me. I found this to have more blue fruit than red fruit up front. Oak was there but not overwhelming in any way. I enjoyed the plushness of this wine. I know some find Napa wines to have too much of that soft, plush mouthfeel these days, but I thought this was great.

This was the preferred Cabernet on the evening and none was left over.

2020 Block Five Cabernet Sauvignon
The nose on this wine was not as robust as the other two bottles. Initial palate was a little muted, but there were some dark fruits and tobacco lurking in there. The finish wasn’t as long as the 2019 Oakville but was very satisfying. The group enjoyed the wine, but after the 2019 Oakville it didn’t seem to be quite as robust.

About 3 ounces of this wine remained, I re-corked, put it in the refrigerator and finished it the next night. The palate seemed to fill out overnight with the tobacco coming more to the front. The nose was still a little soft, but I enjoyed it much more the next day than the initial night. My guess is this bottle needs some bottle age and will flesh out into a really nice wine.

Overall, these are well made wines that our group enjoyed. Their shipping was great, wines well packed with good automated follow up from their shipping program keeping me informed on the shipment. I don’t hesitate to recommend these wines to any Berserker!

Frias Family Vineyards

Our group of five was given an opportunity to taste the Frias Family Vineyards offerings. I cannot improve upon the notes above from Mr. Roby. I could taste the wines while reading his notes.

2022 Sauvignon Blanc
This would very likely be the WOTN in a wine group white wine tasting. Apple on the nose, beautiful juicy mouthfeel. Apple and citrus on the palate. The fruit and acidity are in balance, there’s more body than typical of a Sauvignon Blanc. The wine could be enjoyed as a cocktail and would certainly complement salads and seafood courses. I will be purchasing.

2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
This is a very nice Napa cab. The medium intensity nose of cherry and pomegranate follows on the palate. Medium body. Fruit, tannins, acidity are balance. A very nice finish. Ready to drink.

2019 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
This was our favorite red, there were lots of oohs and aahs. I saved a glass under argon and we revisited it this week, the wine has improved and is now spectacular. Group notes from mid December show the nose was a medium high intensity, but not cloying, leather, cherry, raspberry. The wine had a very plush mouthfeel with a rich full body balanced with the acidity and tannins. It was fantastic on its own. The wine could overpower many menus. Food pairings would have to be carefully planned.

These are excellent wines that I would be happy to recommend without reservation. Thanks for the opportunity. I’ll check the thread later tomorrow.

I’m a long time collector of Frias Family wines and their Prado bottling is my favorite.

The SB is solid and the Oakville is quintessential Napa. The difference here is their cabs are well controlled and not over extracted fruit bombs.

Order in on the SB. Looking forward to it!

Thanks @John_Davila I appreciate your comment. I agree with you the SB is good, but Frias is better known for our Cabernet Sauvignons. I think you also hit the nail on the head, the wines show restraint, they could be made in a much bigger style but they’re not overly extracted and reducted. One of the cool things about the Frias Cabernets is that they are all 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
