French Bordeaux Red Wines and Domestic Cabernet Sauvignon Wines under $20.00

I am looking for good French Bordeaux Red wines and Domestic Cabernet Sauvignon wines under $20.00 for my girlfriend. Can you please give me some recommendations?

I was pleasantly surprised by the 2014 Chatea de Landiras, Graves, for about $15. My Berserker buddy Ian bought several cases for mid-week drinking.

Cambon la Pelouse is generally a winner, was killer in 2010.

Senejac is solid as well. Usually around $16-$20.

More in the modern style, but my family members like Cap du Faugeres from Castillon and Carlmagnus and La Vieille Cure from Fronsac, generally under or at $20. LVC could be higher but 2014 is $20.

On the Domestic front you can usually pick up Cabs from big producers like Mondavi, L Martini, Berringer, Sebastini, Kendall Jackson and others for $20 or less. Especially in strong vintages. I normally like them better after time in the cellar which might be a problem for your girlfriend.

I’ve always found Lanessan pretty reliable in that price point.

+1 to Lanessan, Senejac, and Louis Martini

Y’all are talking about the Louis Martini Sonoma?

Because the L.M. Alexander is almost/roughly twice as expensive.

Any thoughts on L.M. Sonoma -vs- Alexander?

I just checked - in our market, the Alexander is actually a little more than twice as expensive as the Sonoma.

Similarly, Lanessan is about $25 down here.

I think many of you know Lannessan was probably top of my list, but when I googled it, I did not see it anywhere for 20 or less. I somehow have been able to find it for that price, but only in futures recently or on sale. For example total wine carries it, and if you find the regular 20% off coupons, you can get it for that price. I recently just bought some magnums of It, 2009 and 2010, for a little over $40.

‘14 La Tonnelle. As long as you don’t mind a little green in your cab. Tastes like a St Estephe.

Ha, just got an email from WTSO on this wine, check the website. $16.99.

Another vote for the 2014 de Landiras. We bought a case and each bottle has been wonderful, especially considering the price.

Thanks,
Ed

Lots of great wines from Wahington, but I always find the Merlots deliver more of the BDX experience than Cabs, or Cab blends with a good but of Merlot. Charles Smith’s Substance Cab delivers for $12 to $15.

Always like La Croix Mouton and Bolaire for value Bordeaux plays…and Marjosse in ripe years from Entre Deux Mers.

In addition to all the above I’d suggest

Medocs

Bernadotte - middle of the road style
Charmail - modern styled
Tour St Bonnet - traditional

Libournais

Barde Haut - modern, and I’m cheating on the price limit
Croix Mouton - modern and I might be wrong about the region
Fleur du Bouard - modern, and likely slightly above the price point

I suggest looking for anything that comes from Jeff Davies Selections.

Second Senejac, Lanessan, I’ve had some good results with Cap de Faugeres (merlot but good), and Beaulieu Comtes de Tastes (2008 and 2009) and LVC as well.

Substance cab
Another vote for cap de faugeres
The 2015 Chateau Durand Laplagne is a screaming deal imo

Yes, yes. Forgot about this call. Good one, Kris.

A fascinating thing about this wine is, it’s 50% petite verdot.

Shoot, I’m gonna go grab some more . . . .

Yes, Cap de Faugeres is a nice sub-$20 wine in a modern (but not over the top) style. But I can’t recall having had it in a while.

I’m still drinking 00 & 03s. Great juice for low $$

The Kirkland-branded cabs might be worth checking out. Their label tends to be good+ most of the time.
