Francois Chidaine 2006 Vouvray Clos Baudoin

Just Opened about 5 minutes ago. Smelled of rotten apples upon opening but that seems to have blown off. I am finding the nose a little reticent but there is plenty of honey. I can faintly pick out some spiced pear aromas with a bit of wool and slight hint of petrol. On the palate this is a little sweeter then I would have expected and not terribly riveting. Its definately honeyed with some baked apple notes but not much else going on. I am tasting something strange in the mid-palate that I can’'t quite put my finger on. Mint? Sage? I am not sure I like it. The flavor becomes more pronounced after a bite of goat cheese. Finish is pretty clipped and doesn’t have the umph from the acid that I expect from a good Chenin. Its early yet, the wine is still too cold, maybe it will reveal more after it warms and breaths some more. So far though, disappointing. This doesn’t hold a candle to the lovely Clos Habert I had last night.

Well, it picked up some complexity with air but didn’t really get any more attractive. Lots of alcoholic heat on the finish makes it undrinkable in my humble opinion. Maybe this comes together with time in the bottle but I am dubious. Huge disappointment from one of my favorite producers.
