Which of the two do you find yourself going to most frequently? Now, I’m not talking about having a cocktail before dinner. But whether at home or out, are you choosing one over the other on a frequent basis?
Totally depends on if I’m drinking solo or with others. If it’s just me I’m tempted to go with whiskey so I don’t have to pop open a whole wine bottle - its meant for sharing after all
If I had to give up one or the other (which I don’t at present), I’d give up spirits, but I’d certainly miss it.
Since my wife is with me a majority of nights that I drink, and she doesn’t like spirits, I’m mostly drinking wine lately. Whisk(e)y is mostly for times when my wife isn’t imbibing with me and/or for situations in which the spirits selection is much better than the wine or beer selection. My scotch and bourbon consumption has definitely decreased over the last decade, and the stockpile I amassed isn’t exactly appropriate given my current burn rate. I still love spirits, but bourbon-bro culture (and the other spirits that followed-suit in the US) also drove me away from my enthusiasm somewhat. I just want my Springbank 12 CS back at under $120 .
I still indulge as a night cap sometimes instead of wine or after wine, especially if I can earn brownie points by conceding the last glass in a bottle of wine to my wife .
Since I got deep into wine, that’s pushed whiskey (mostly Scotch) to the back burner for me except when I’m with friends who enjoy it, or on those cold winter nights. Wine is something I have to find an excuse not to drink every day.
depends on mood, restaurant, lists, whether I brought a bottle, whether wife or I am driving . . .
Rarely will I drink whisky out. With wine I love to taste something new and lists provide me that outlet. With Whisky, I prefer my tried and trues and save them for the at home dram.
Wine much more than whiskey. If I’m solo I always pour 1/2 wine bottle into a 375 and it goes in the fridge. An open bottle of bourbon will last 3-6 months at home, maybe more, and generally won’t get replaced for about the same amount of time. I no longer collect bourbon.
I mix them together and pour over ice.
I can’t say that I’m surprised.
Wine. Champagne particularly. Like whisky in the winter, or on a Friday after a hard week once the kids are in bed. Very rarely pour myself a scotch at 6:30 while making dinner or chatting with fam as I get home from work, but happy to do that with a glass of wine.
This. 100%
I’m such a massive fan of the smaller bottles for saving half bottles of wine. I feel so much less guilt opening a nice bottle and it also allows my partner and I to enjoy different wines on a given night w/o overindulging.
For me it’s usually about the meal. I enjoy beer, cocktails and spirits but usually wine is the best partner with a meal. I really dislike cocktail pairings and I can’t really imagine drinking whiskey during a meal. I’ll mostly drink whiskey as a nightcap on the weekends.
Whisky pricing is a problem too. When a two ounce pour is half the cost of the bottle at home.
Yea. That is a def part of it.
Don’t we all. The 10 is almost at $120 now!
Solo drinking - a spirit
With my wife - wine
Bought my last Springbank 12CS (and still unopened) bottle for under 90 in 2019.
Lowest current price in IL is $499.99 on WSPro.
Re consumption habits, I try to confine spirits to a small pour twice a week, but never with a meal… with dinner, in decreasing order, wine, NA beer or least frequently, beer
Had a local offer on a Springbank 25 for 1K over the weekend and passed. There comes a point when it’s just not fun anymore.
Don’t start. The whiskies my friends and I bottled for <100/bottle now sell between $5-10K/bottle, which is stoopid. Every time I open one, it is bittersweet, because I can’t replace them. Good 20th Century whisky is no longer a beverage, it is a collectible.
When I’m out, it depends on the wine list.
Same here. I seem to gravitate towards drinking scotch when drinking solo. I personally love Lagavulin 16
