Flickinger has a some interesting older wines - stuff mostly from the 1990’s - available as pre-arrivals. I called and they tell me these are coming from a temp-controlled warehouse in Europe.
Anyone have experience with the condition/provenance of such pre-arrivals from Flickinger? I’ve only sourced recent releases in stock from them, so I’m flying blind here.
Though I have only bought older bottles on a few occasions from them (no problems any time and, more recently, accurate descriptions of condition for the bottles from the 60s that I bought), knowing Pete and Tom, they are not guys who seem willing to risk provenance to make a quick buck. Always have struck me as careful and have commented on that to me a number of times when I have talked about sourcing with Pete. I personally wouldn’t hesitate to do business with them…and i would think they would be happy to talk on the phone if you want more details on the bottles.
Perhaps hard to argue with that with any retsiler, but having talked with Pete, often in detail about overseas sourcing, on and off since they started years ago, I have distinctly gotten the sense that they are pretty discriminating and perhaps more so than many brokers. I always see it as a risk but perhaps somewhat lower with them (at least in my opinion) then with many/most others.
Fair enough. But some outfits have a track record of only sourcing “sound” grey market wines in Europe. In my experience, premier cru is quite reliable in this regard. Sounds like Flickinger can be counted on to source well-stored juice.
I have ordered a few mixed cases of wines of varying regions and ages and have had absolutely no problems. Always a very positive customer service experience.
Not only have I purchased from them with good results but as a seller I can confirm that they are much more discerning than the average retailer as per the conditions and sourcing of the wine.
