Flaviar Acquires Wine-Searcher

If you go to the top level home page, I am able to search all of the “buy it now” (or whatever it’s called) wines and filter by region. I think there are at least 20 stores with inventory to choose from. I think it would take a pretty nice deal for me to test this out, and I didn’t really see any either.

I tried using this “buy button” a few weeks ago, and did not have the greatest (or, really, worst) experience.

WS Pro listed a killer price on some Ch. Meyney (literally 1/2 what everyone else was offering). When I went to the retailer site, it said they would not ship to my state. Not too unusual.

But, I went back to WS, and clicked the “Buy” button. It collected my address, tooke my credit card and processed my order (through Flavair). Credit card was charged.

About a week later, I got an email saying they were out of stock and could not ship. My credit card was fully refunded.

Not that I’m relating this comment to your experience, but backs up what I said up stream.

This sounds like an utterly useless feature that is redundant, and W-S/Flaviar to cash in on some of the listings.

I can’t imagine having a random retailer up top showing what is in all likelihood not the lowest price will be a significant driver of revenue. Vivino at least makes it hard to see the other prices so you don’t know if the purchase-through-Vivino option is a good deal or not.

if anyone knows, what is the range of pricing that W-S charges a store / month? i’ve anecdotally heard numbers in the several of thousands.

It varies based on clicks.

I got my bill for next year, and if I pay it all in one shot, it’s a little over $1000.

Month to month payment would be around $1200.

interesting - but to confirm, you’re paying for clicks from w-s to domaine, right?

do they surface if that user originated their journey on w-s or a search engine?

Don’t hold me to it, but an expansion of spirits on WS and ability to ship thru Flaviar will drive this feature, not necessarily wine.

Yes, and they based on an annualized approach.

I don’t really understand how it’s tracked other than from their website to mine.

I would assume yes, but based on the experience above, it doesn’t sound like Flaviar is helping with the shipping? (which is what Frootbat does).

if the retailer says they don’t ship to that state, it sounds like that’s it?

In Europe it escalates quickly. From free to $220 a month to be at the top of the list.

No click based pricing.

W-S greatly benefits us because we follow pricing of the auction not, so defacto we end up with the best price about 99% of the time. So it works for us.

Truthfully, it’s our 3rd best salesman. Me, then our emails, then W-S. So I’ll keep him around for the money I’m paying and the return I’m getting.

The only way to look at it imo.

Assume you capture info on all new customers as well.

Sure, when they place an order.

This is a disaster. I will not renew my WineSearcherPro subscription.

We know why we lose the ones that don’t buy.

Sales tax.

That’s wild! Abandoned carts are the worst.

Hi Ian,
Glad to hear that we are helping to drive your sales.

In regards to 'it doesn’t sound like Flaviar is helping with the shipping." Wine-Searcher is partnering with Flaviar Checkout to provide secure ordering directly on Wine-Searcher. Initially a US-only program, all products are supplied by licensed retailers, and deliveries are shipped directly from the participating stores.

As a buyer:

  • ‘Add-to-cart’ button checks with a store’s point of sale system and provides the convenience of buy now.

  • ‘Go-to-shop’ button takes you to the particular store’s product landing page.

Hi Russell,
Allow me to clarify, Wine-Searcher’s pricing is transparent and is published on our website - it’s been that way for 10 years. All stores with a sponsored list are charged using a pay-per-click model. The click count is averaged and billed monthly.

Hi, so it’s $220 a month for three months and then pay per click at $0.66 and $65 a month. I see that now in the faqs.

It was this page that made me think it was monthly only. I admit I didn’t investigate further as $220 is prohibitive for a tiny shop like us.
