Finger Lakes this weekend

I’m so excited. I’m going to the Finger Lakes this weekend for the first time and wine tasting will definitely be priority one. Any must see wineries there? This is a trip that we are just kind of winging and I honestly haven’t had a lot of wines from NY, so I’m curious.

Wiemer

+1

Wiemer and Dr Frank are almost obligatory. Next to Dr. Frank is Heron Hill, a beautiful winery with a spectacular view, but the wines not so much.

Ravines is also well worth a visit.

Both Hosmer and Damiani are not much to look at but have very nice wines.

Bloomer Creek is an up and comer that makes a fabulous Pinot Noir. I haven’t visited them but the wines are good.

Red Newt has a good restaurant, though a little too “white table cloth” for me, and decent wines.

If Evan Dawson replies, ignore what everyone else (including me) says and listen to him.

Where are you going? It’s a pretty big region. Most of the best wineries are on Seneca and Keuka.

Search this forum for lots of notes on wineries to visit. Esp. look for posts by Evan Dawson, who writes for NY Cork Report and recently published a book called “Summer in a Glass”.

I have also enjoyed Standing Stone’s wines in the past in addition to many of those mentioned, though haven’t yet been able to visit the winery.

You MUST try and purchase Summer in a Glass before you go! A must read before a visit to the FL. I am heading up in Dec for the first time, can’t wait to meet these passionate artists.

Also, staying at The Black Sheep. Great review in the NY Cork Report.

neh gawanutneh!

+1, almost exactly the same choices I was going to list. I’m very impressed by the Rieslings in general and Ravines’ Pinot Noir from the Finger Lakes; Cabernet Franc not so much. If you click the link in my sig you can find some tasting notes on Finger Lakes rieslings that I posted recently. Enjoy your trip, and report back on your highlights!

Alan

Great notes, thanks.

Sweet! Thanks for the link Alan. I will be going to the southern part of both Keuka and Seneca Lakes. I was reading some of Karen Macneil’s recommendations in the area, so I am definitely hitting Dr Franks and Bully Hill. As we speak I am getting addresses to all of your suggestions. Thanks! I will DEFINITELY post after the trip. Luckily it is supposed to be gorgeous weather.

You have to go to Silver Spring Winery…John Zuccarino makes some killer wines. [wow.gif]

John can be polarizing for sure and I am guessing Steve is not serious. That said, almost everyone I know that stopped by the tasting room found it worthwhile including my wife and I. His wines cover the spectrum, but some are outstanding especially his dessert Gewurtz.

BTW, Bully Hill should be fun but I doubt the wines will be a highlight.

Second the Evan Dawson rec. It is an easy read and worth checking out.

I’ll definitely check out “Summer in a Glass”, though not before I leave for NY unfortunately. I’m driving there after work today. I am having trouble finding an address for Silver Spring Winery. Is it on the Seneca Wine trail? Wiemer… I can and will do.

Thanks Loren,
I purchased “Summer in a Glass” on Amazon too. Won’t have it for THIS trip, but there is always a next time. [cheers.gif]

Just to mention a few:
Ravines on Keuka,
Red Newt on the East Side of Seneca,
Standing Stone
Fox Run
Heart and Hands (Pinot Noir)
Heron Hill

Great places to eat include Ports in Geneva, Red Newt, Suzanne, amongst others. The weather here this weekend is going to be great, so you should have a wonderful time.

Love Hermann J. Wiemer Rieslings, but I must be the only one here not impressed with Dr Frank…in fact, none of the 12 people in our group found Frank’s wine worthy of purchase…in addition, the “velvet rope” entrance and the snobbish attitude of the pouring staff put us off as well…

I must be the only one here not impressed with Dr Frank

Agree that they have gotten complacent in more ways than one, but Dr. Frank (the person) was the Andre Tchelistcheff of the Finger Lakes. The winery is a good place to start to get a sense of the history and evolution of modern wine making in the Finger Lakes.

If you make it to the top of Seneca Lake we can hook you up with a copy of Summer in A Glass.

Also On the North side of the Lake I would recommend:

Miles
Billsboro
Anthony Road (which is especially featured in Summer in a Glass)

If you have time on the back end, consider stopping at the Corning Museum of Glass. Just went there for the second time yesterday and had a great. Such a neat place.
