Falltacular 2025--Notes and Comments thread

Tomorrow is our 19th time we have run the event. Everything we do is directed at helping Laura’ House, which is an important local resource for helping victims who are fleeing domestic violence. All of tomorrow’s proceeds will be donated to them, which includes the front door tickets (just under $12,000 collected) and the silent auction we will run tomorrow in the garage, which has just under $10,000 in starting bids for the items we will sell. Here is the website for Laura’s House if you would like to learn more, perhaps even make a small donation (these are the same folks who I donate to when I run my charity week of tasting notes during our November and December Wine Berserkers tasting note events).

Domestic Violence is apolitical, and it affects everyone–victims, their network around them, the community and our social web that we all live in. With that in mind, I want to thank the wineries who have donated everything for tomorrow’s tasting inside the house. The list of them is below (and the wines we’re pouring from them), with some of these wineries with me for all 19 years. That means sending bottles, sometimes cases of wines to be poured and auctioned. If you see a winery on the list below, support them–you now have information that they are giving back to my community, the people within it who have been suffering and who are trying to start their lives over. These are wineries that care and donate.

We’ll see some of you tomorrow at the event for a great day here at the house, another opportunity for fellowship, fun and doing something to give back.

And one other note…not only do the wineries help, but so do many of you that are on this forum. With that said, here is the silent auction tomorrow of what is being auctioned. This is a generous community, and I have @ToddFrench to thank for being my information partner for this event for nearly all of these years.

Wow, amazing auctions, as has been the case lately!! We’ll bring our credit cards…I’m bringing Jen’s dad with me and he just moved to CA, so he happens to need some wine!

Truly looking forward to taking part - though not looking forward to the drive per se, but at least it won’t be raining! And my car is bound to smell like freshly baked Jalapeno Cheddar Bread

One of my favorite wine events each year - looking forward to lots of hugs and handshakes!

Cheers.

Tis soooo gooood!

A couple notes from last night. I popped these in the hotel before dinner.

  • 2018 Pax Syrah Majik Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (3/15/2025)
Pre-Falltacular Friday night dinner at Basanti in San Juan Capistrano.
Oh, memories of big fat heavy bottles encased in wax. Cellared since release. Pours dark ruby red, nose is bursting with black and green olive, blood, iron.
Tart blackberry and blueberry meet white pepper on a medium bodied palate showing some finesse rather than heft. That iron on
the nose translates to the mid-palate along with roasted meat and it finishes lean and lip smacking with fully resolved tannins at an absolute peak of maturity. No secondary notes to speak to other than a hint of camphor. Open one, you’ll be rewarded! 195 cases produced 12% abv.

    • 2014 Drinkward Peschon Cabernet Sauvignon Entre Deux Mères - USA, California, Napa Valley (3/15/2025)
Pre-Falltacular Friday dinner at Basanti in San Juan Capistrano.
Pours ruby black, nose of cassis, cedar, black currant, pencil lead. Mocha, coffee bean, black currant, firm ripe tannins, mouth puckering acidity. It keeps coming at you in layers, fruit, spice box, chalk and tangy tartness that pushes the finish on and on. Still showingnoretty young. Expect a long life ahead. Extended the drinking window to 2035 but that may be conservative.. Winner!

    • 2012 Bucklin Ancient Field Blend Old Hill Ranch - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley (3/15/2025)
This was a but wound up when I pulled the cork but it developed nicely over dinner. Ruby red with a magenta rim. Nose of blackberry, scorched earth, bramble, rose petals and spice. Really spicy palate reminding me of volcanic soil, earthy, mature red and black fruits, very structured more spice and enough acidity to balance it all out. I opened this way too early but it was well received at the table. Nice glimpse at what will be in store over the next 10-15yrs. Exceptional wine from a legendary site.

The house is setup and it’s time for QC!

  • 2023 Kutch Pinot Noir Ridge Top Mindego Ridge Vineyard - USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains (3/15/2025)
Another go at this stuff. Neon color in the glass. The whole cluster (50%) gives this a spice lift but doesn't add green. The fruit on this is just so pure and concentrated, yet this doesn't come across as heavy to me. All the colors--red, blue, maybe a little black but it's a purple-toned perception on my palate. The finish? Crushed rocks, blueberry and red apple skins. Tannin here, which lifts the wine and supports with some more power. As opposed to a few weeks ago when we had this as part of the larger Kutch theme, I've got this singly on its own and I can really sense the power. Incredible sh#t, a bravo to Jamie for putting this wine off the property into its own cuvee.

Next while I have time is the side-by-side of the McDougall 2023s from Jamie and Will. These are different, I think in part through how I sense the use of the barrel. In Jamie’s, the wood is not present, although the whole cluster is more additive to the overall wine, how it shows. For Will’s wine, the wood takes the fruit and tactile impression in a sexier direction. The fruits on both are similar, a red/black mix.

  • 2023 Kutch Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (3/15/2025)
Opened about an hour ago. Some metal shaving aroma. Spicy, with dark raspberry and dark cherry, then a tangy acid comes through. A bit creamy and primary still, with a deep concentration of red and black fruit, with a juicy finish.
  • 2023 William & Mary Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch - USA, California, Sonoma County, Fort Ross - Seaview (3/15/2025)
Yikes, first note. I appreciate Will letting us have some of this for the charity event, and to taste it right out of the chute. Aroma? Like a crushed fruit pastry, moreso like the filling inside of it and perfume. Think of letting that waft from the glass. Dark raspberry, strawberry, some spice, like a cardamom or aromatic cooking spice in that vein. Sexy, yet some tannin in the finish. Some new wood that is seasoning this, which adds the sexy tone.

And one more as my time is running short before we start the event, one more favorite from year’s past. I was tasting through our Pinot Noir table and this one hit me. Stop and capture. Graham Family by Mr K at its best.

  • 2023 August West Pinot Noir Graham Family Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (3/15/2025)
I've been drinking this wine since the 2005 release. It has been a favorite and woven into the DNA of our annual charity event. It's consistently something I look to taste, and that others have an attraction and fondness for, too. The color on the 2023 is ruby, lighter for Pinot Noir, but for me that is Ed's style with Graham Family. Suave, cherries, herb, red licorice. Juicy and beautifully expressive with soil, herb and red fruits in the finish. Whatever oak is applied here is smart, but that's Ed K's magic. This is a lovely Pinot Noir, with great flavor, acid and gentle, balanced expression. Bravo!

No asparagus, my friend! I do wish somebody brought one of those to the event for all of us to try though. Seriously.
