2020 Sant’Or Santameriana, Achaia, Peloponnese, Greece
Santameriana is an ancient grape grown only in the Greek village of Santomeri. It was revived by winemaker Panagiotis Dimitropoulos, who is the sole producer of the variety. Panagiotis coaxes exciting flavors of Bartlett pear, bergamot, tangerine, white nectarine, and wet stones from this exceedingly rare and hard to fine variety, once believed to be lost to history,
For more than four years, AWG’s flagship product has been the Ancient Wines Club, a bi-monthly selection of three unique wines connected to a particular theme drawn from the worlds of ancient history, archaeology, and mythology. Our selections feature hard-to-find wines from unique regions, with many made from some of the world of wine’s most ancient, historic, or rare varieties. These packs are a fantastic way to explore wine regions, varieties, and producers you may or may not be familiar with.
Our write-ups aim to meaningfully connect our wine selections to the places and stories that shape them. They are designed to be fun, inspiring, engaging, and accessible to history buffs and wine enthusiasts of all levels, neophyte to expert, all while providing a uniquely educational experience. Click these links to see an example of our writeups for Club #22 - Daughters of Memory: Wines of the Greek Muses, or Club #14 - Minerals & Monuments: Terroirs of Ancient Egypt.

[Pack A: Original Price: $75 - Berserker Price: $65]
Pack A, The Radiant Trade, features three exceptional, hard-to-find wines from the along the Amber Road, an ancient trade route that brought precious amber from the Baltic Sea all the way to Rome. Delve into the mythology, history, and material relationships with amber in the ancient world. Once you’ve tried these wines, you’ll be willing to trade a whole caravan full of amber for them!
Write-up Topics: Ancient Trade Routes. The History and Mythology of Amber. Ancient Pannonia/Central Europe. Wines of Slovenia and Eastern Austria.
- 2022 ÄŚrnko JareninÄŤan 1L White Field Blend
Maribor, Slovenia, France - White Field Blend.
Crisp, aromatic, and immensely drinkable, this is the type of party/picnic-friendly wine served liberally in small villages and humble taverns across Slovenia. Jareninčan is a blend of local grape varieties Laški Rizling & Ravenec plus Sauvignon Blanc in a 1 liter crown-cap format that’ll make you wish it came in an even larger bottle.
- 2021 Johannes Trapl “Uni6” Red Blend
Carnuntum, Austria - Light Red/Dark Rose Blend of Zweigelt, Sankt Laurent, and Blaufränkisch.
“Uni6” is a highly unique, dark rose/light red vibrantly-colored blend of biodynamically farmed Zweigelt, Sankt Laurent, and Blaufränkisch. It’s fermented in stainless steel before being aged in both barrel and qvevri for eight months and bottled with residual effervescence for even more fun. Bottled with a crown-cap and showing best with a chill, this is a wine that seems like it could be “simple” but is really chock full of complex layers of red fruits, meadowy herbs, and spice tones.
- 2019 Ĺ toka Izbrani Teran
Kras, Slovenia - 100% Teran.
Often described as “deeply colored,” “bold,” or even “bloody,” the Teran grape may have a bit of a stigma about it. However, any of the coarser characteristics the grape may be associated with are expertly tamed and beautifully expressed in this version by Štoka. The “terra rossa” iron-rich red karst soils of Slovenia’s winemaking region Kras provide beautiful structure alongside notes of tart wild boysenberry, amaro, dusty earth, and peppercorns. Cellar-worthy for certain.

[Pack B: Original Price: $75 - Berserker Price: $65]
Pack B, In Vino Ventus, explores the fascinating connections between wine and wind in the ancient world, from the Egyptians and Babylonians to the Greeks and Romans. Dig into the mythology and ancient technology related to this primal element, as well as its profound effects on modern wine-growing regions around the world.
Write-up Topics: The Ancient Winds. Origins of the Compass & Cardinal Directions. Ancient Technology. Wine, Wind, and Terroir.
- 2018 Domaine Rouge Bleu “Mistral” Rhône Red GSM Blend
AOC CĂ´tes-du-RhĂ´ne-Villages, RhĂ´ne Valley, France - GSM blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, and Roussanne.
Named after the famous wind, “Mistral” is an elegant, richly textured, organic and biodynamically-farmed Rhône blend that hails from the village of Sainte Cécile. Layers of plum, black/white pepper, and clafoutis bolstered by a backbone of tannin from clearly well-sourced Syrah fruit and some aromatic lift from a splash of Roussanne.
- 2017 Tenuta di Castellaro “Ypsilon”
Terre Siciliane IGP, Lipari, Italy - 60% Corinto Nero, 20% Alicante Bouchet, and 20% Nero d’Avola.
Grown in highly volcanic soils, this island-born red blend shows potential for immense range both at the table and in the cellar. Baskets of berry fruits with a streak of savory, dried herb tones woven throughout keep your nose in the glass of this Italian wine whose bottle is dangerously easy to empty single-handedly…
- 2020 Markou Vineyards Savatiano
Attica, Greece, 100% Savatiano.
You would be forgiven for not knowing that Savatiano is one of the most widely planted white grapes in Greece, most commonly (and often unfortunately) used in the production of Retsina. Fortunately for us, Markou produces a single variety expression from 60+ year old vines that shows what this “humble” grape can offer: a pleasant, effortlessly enjoyable showcase of yellow and green orchard fruits such as golden apples, Asian pears, and white flowers - all perfectly suited for grilled haloumi or your favorite meze platter.

[Pack C: Original Price: $75 - Berserker Price: $65]
Pack C, Of Grapes and Glory, features a fascinating exploration of the rich history, mythology, and archaeology of all four Panhellenic Games sites - Olympia, Delphi, Isthmia, and Nemea. Trace the paths of heroes such as Heracles and Milo of Croton via three sensational wines from Greece and Italy that bring these ancient games back to life.
Write-up Topics: Ancient Athletics. Myth & History of the Olympics. Legendary Heroes. Archaeological Ruins.
- 2019 Sant’or Roditis “Nature”
Achaia, Peloponnese, Greece - 100% Roditis.
Farmed from a mere 11 hectares above the city of Patras, north of Olympia, this golden-hued expression of Greece’s second-most-planted white variety is refreshing-yet-textured, full of Chenin Blanc-like notes of quince, dried apples, and yellow peaches.
- 2021 Tetramythos Agioritiko “Naturε”
Kalavryta, Gulf of Corinth, Peloponnese, Greece - 100% Agiorgitiko
Made from Agiorgitiko, a grape often blended with international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s a treat for us that Tetramythos gives a spotlight for the grape to shine. Utilizing old vines overlooking the Gulf of Corinth and aging in stainless steel tanks results in a heady wine full of bright, youthful, raspberry, cherry, and wild strawberry fruits wound together with light tannins reminiscent of a young, fresh, Cru Beaujolais from Regnié, Chiroubles, or Fleurie.
- 2019 Ippolito “Liber Pater” Gaglioppo
Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore, Cirò, Calabria, Italy - 100% Gaglioppo.
In Ancient Greece, wines from Cirò (then known as Krimisa) were given as a prize to victors of the Panhellenic Games. Somewhat akin to a great Chianti (DNA testing even shows a relationship between Gaglioppo and Sangiovese), this classic version shows all the spiced cherry, and dusty earth tones you’d expect from a wine that you might find yourself craving every time someone says the words “chicken cacciatore” out loud.
