EXTENDED! Fidélitas - Family-Farmed, Family-Made | The Best of Red Mountain at 30-50% off (BD17 NEWBIE)

Will & Charlie Hoppes with our 3rd generation winemaker-in-training, Baby Charlie

Fidélitas is nestled in the heart of Washington’s most distinctive terroir, Red Mountain.
What began in a family kitchen in 1982 has grown into a generational pursuit—to honor the land we call home and craft world-class wines.

Hello Berserkers!

It’s our first time at BerserkerDay and we couldn’t be more excited! I’m Greg from Fidélitas, and today I’m honored to share wines from a true Washington winemaking icon, Charlie Hoppes. We’ve put together two Red Mountain sampler packs at 30–50% off, featuring library favorites and single-vineyard wines from Blackwood Canyon, Quintessence, Heart of the Hill, and Fidélitas Estate.

Charlie & kids (Will in center) at Canoe Ridge site, 1993

About Us:
Fidélitas is Family-Farmed, Family-Made. Our winery is run by father-son winemaking team Charlie and Will Hoppes, and founded in 2000 by Charlie after having spent the previous decade serving as both Head White and Head Red Winemaker at Chateau Ste. Michelle. During his tenure, he helped open the Canoe Ridge facility, crafted the first few vintages of Col Solare in partnership with the Antinori family, and made Ste. Michelle’s first red in Wine Spectator’s Top 100: the 1995 Indian Wells Merlot—an achievement that solidified his standing as a lifelong advocate and defining voice for Merlot in Washington State. Charlie just finished his 38th vintage in Washington and his son, Will, who grew up working in the cellar is back at Fidélitas continuing his dad’s legacy.

Our wines are made from 100% Red Mountain AVA fruit, sourced from 8-10 longtime vineyard partners as well as our Estate Vineyard, first planted in 2008 and farmed by the one and only Dick Boushey. We exclusively produce Bordeaux varietals, released as single-vineyard, single-varietal bottlings and Bordeaux-style blends, with a focus on small-lot, terroir-driven winemaking.

Our wines stand out for their full body, concentration, and firm tannic structure, typically showing more depth and intensity than many other Washington wines. We harvest early by design and take a gentle, precise approach to extraction, crafting wines that are balanced, varietally expressive, and naturally high in acidity.

From Eric Guido of Vinous: “The wines at Fidélitas are big, dark and elegant in the classic style that put Red Mountain Bordeaux blends on the map. Owner/Winemaker Charlie Hoppes has mastered the art of tempering Red Mountain’s typically firm tannins with a well-measured dose of oak. These wines are not shy, but they’re very well balanced and can mature beautifully. This portfolio is the perfect segue into Washington wine for any fan of California Cabernet Sauvignon.” (Oct. 2025)

“Dark, rich and powerful, yet lovable and balanced to mature gracefully, the Fidélitas wines greatly communicate Red Mountain’s noble terroir. The tannin management at Fidélitas sets these wines apart from the rest. Hoppes achieves a seductive style that makes these wines approachable in their youth while still possessing the bones for long life in the cellar.” (Oct. 2023)

I will be online and monitoring this thread all day, so please say hello and reach out with any questions!

Technical Info:

2023 Optu White Wine, Red Mountain | $40
94 points Owen Bargreen, 93 International Wine Report

  • 58% Sauvignon Blanc, 42% Semillon
  • 79% Artz Vineyard, 21% Klipsun Vineyard
  • 11 months in 25% new French oak
  • 576 cases produced
  • 14.3% abv

Winemaker notes: Our 2023 Red Mountain Optu White is a traditional Bordeaux Blanc blend sourced from 30+ year old vines at Artz and Klipsun vineyards. These mature blocks sit at the bottom of the appellation where the cooling effects of the Yakima river are greater helping to preserve natural acidity and freshness in white varietals. In the glass the wine is a bright gold color typical of a barrel fermented white Bordeaux. On the aroma we get honeyed tropical fruit and wonderful floral scents coming from the warm weather Semillon, paired with peach and lemon from the Sauvignon Blanc. The palate is rich but balanced with a mouthwatering acidity - passionfruit, white peach, and grapefruit. While sipping on Optu White we think of enjoying with all sorts fresh Pacific Northwest seafood dishes.

2019 Quintessence Vineyard Merlot, Red Mountain | $55
94 points Owen Bargreen

  • 100% Merlot from Quintessence Vineyard (Sustainable WA Certified)
  • 22 months in 50% new French & 10% new American oak
  • 490 cases produced
  • 14.9% abv

Winemaker notes: Our Quintessence Vineyard Merlot is sourced from a high elevation block that steeply slopes towards the East on a rocky hillside and right into the teeth of the Red Mountain sunrise. This has got to be one of the hottest blocks on the hillside and as a result is consistently the first red fruit we bring into the cellar every harvest. As a result this Merlot is extremely concentrated and rich, but balanced with a backbone of fresh acidity. On the aroma we get wet rocks, bay leaf, and Bing cherry. The palate is full of red fruit; plum, raspberry, and vanilla bean. We love this wine with all sorts of dishes…grilled chicken, roasted lamb, and pasta with a rich red sauce to name a few. Drink now through 2035.

2019 Fidélitas Estate Vineyard Red Blend, Red Mountain | $60
94 points Owen Bargreen

  • 50% Cab Sauv, 25% Petit Verdot, 20% Merlot, 5% Cab Franc from Fidélitas Estate (Sustainable WA Certified)
  • 22 months in 70% new French & 15% new American oak
  • 490 cases produced
  • 14.2% abv

Winemaker notes: The second vintage of a Bordeaux blend out the Estate is a showcase of our newer blocks planted in 2015. This blend was built from the ground up, selecting some of our favorite clones of Cabernet—33 and 6 in this blend—and other familiar varietals with the help of Dick Boushey, our vineyard manager since 2008 who brings with him 35+ years of grape growing experience. The large share of Petit Verdot brings some tannin and power to this blend and adds some wonderful green peppercorn spice to the aroma; we get plum and blueberry as well. The palate exhibits a similar silky tannin structure that we see from our Estate Cabernet with cherry, strawberry, and baking spices. It’s an extremely well layered and complex wine. Drink now with a good 30+ minute decant or through 2040.

2020 Blackwood Canyon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Mountain | $80
95 points Owen Bargreen, 93 James Suckling

  • 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from 1984 plantings at Blackwood Canyon
  • 28 months in 50% new French & 24% new American oak
  • 588 cases produced
  • 13.7% abv

Winemaker notes: Blackwood Canyon Cabernet is sourced from 1984 plantings at a historic Red Mountain growing site just 10 yards due West of the edge of the Fidélitas Estate. We’ve sourced this block since 2014, initially taken into the cellar as an experiment to get familiar with our own growing site, and it ended up being a winemaker favorite ever since. The aroma is old school Red Mountain Cabernet full of red fruit — cherry, raspberry, and vanilla bean. The palate is powerful in its youth yet the tannins are polished — blackberry, white pepper, and plum. The 2020 vintage was barrel aged for ~28 months and bottle aged for over a year to let this power house of a wine round into shape although could benefit from additional time in the cellar.

2021 Heart of the Hill Malbec, Red Mountain | $70
95 Owen Bargreen, 94 International Wine Report, 93 James Suckling

  • 100% Malbec from Kiona’s Heart of the Hill Vineyard (Sustainable WA Certified)
  • 22 months in 24% new American & 11% new French oak
  • 441 cases produced
  • 14.2% abv

Winemaker notes: This 100% varietal Malbec is sourced from an picturesque growing site under the care of the Williams family who has 3 generations of farming experience on Red Mountain. We’ve sourced HOH Malbec since 2013 but this is only the third vintage we’ve done as single vineyard bottling carefully perfecting our winemaking techniques over the years. The aroma is classic Red Mountain Malbec jumping out of the glass — cocoa, blackberry, and plum. The palate is rich and full with soft tannins — Bing cherry, raspberry, and white pepper. Do as the Argentinians do and serve with all sorts of BBQ or tacos. Serve now through 2035.

Highlights of our two tasting groups’ notes - Thanks Dave Shorter and Rick Allen and your groups:

2023 Fidelitas Red Mountain Optu
A blend of Sauvignon Blanc (58%) and Semillon (42%). Stone fruits and honey in the nose.
Great acid balance, strong mid-palate of lemon and peach, and very nice finish. A wine that
invites you back for another sip. The consensus was that this would be a great bottle with a
cheese course.

2021 Fidelitas Red Mountain Merlot Quintessence Vineyard
Blueberries and blackberries in the nose. On the palate, explosive blueberries, raspberries,
some oak. Well balanced, excellent mid-palate, and a very nice finish. A complete wine.
Overall, an excellent Washington Merlot.

Any others remember @Greg_Giere from prior BerserkerDays, with Cadence?

Welcome back, with a new winery! To make the cut as a Newbie this year is quite an accomplishment!

Great feedback, I appreciate that being shared! We kept the '23 Optu White (a house favorite) in one of the BD17 offers but thought it might be fun to dip into the library for older vintages of two wines (Quintessence Merlot, Estate Red) that Dave & Rick’s tasting groups got. '19 was a cooler vintage on Red Mountain-- never a bad thing for such a notoriously hot AVA-- an thus the wines tend to have a little more vibrant acidity, more pop.

Snagged some of your '19 Quintessence Cab a while back and liked a lot – in for a mixed case to try some of your other wines!

Thanks Andrew! Really appreciate it!

Many thanks to those who placed orders yesterday! Happy BD17 to all!

In for a mixed case. Red mountain is one of my favorite AVAs we visited on my Washington trip in 2024. Cheers!

Thanks @David.R-- the winery itself is definitely not a newbie , though we are of course new to BerserkerDay. When I started at Fidélitas about a year ago, it was a big priority for me to try and get us in! We’re very grateful to have made the cut.
