Ever Go Through a Stretch of Not Being Moved by Wine?

For me, I tend to be in a “wine funk” when I am in a “life funk”, i.e. extra stessful period of time. Unfortunately, my tendency in the past has been to try and force the wine to be good and moving, RIGHT then. One time I remember opening 4 bottles in one night (but only drinking a total of 3 glasses) trying to find something that was hitting on all cylinders. The wine was never going to be moving, because I was not in a frame a of mind that could be “moved”. I now avoid drinking wine during these times, try to relax and generally end up coming out of the “life funk” quicker and easier.

I get in the funk sometimes. I don’t think I drank a single bottle of Burgundy for all of the Burg days on WB for the last 8 weeks. Riesling usually fixes my ill, though. Sunday night I was very happily surprised by a 2001 Pahlmeyer that was spry and delicious.I was surprised because I don’t get as excited by this region, producer, and these grapes as I used to. I enjoyed the bottle very much. The funk has definitely been something that is hard to describe or calculate. I wonder if it has anything to do with the change of seasons, or the length/shortness of days- which really affects most all plants and animals.

Dennis.
It is the heat.
Going to Canoe for dinner tonight.
Taking a 2002 Donnhoff Niederhauser Spatlese. Trying for the Charlie Carnes fix. [grin.gif]

I also think it is heat related for me, most of the time. Got back from a Carribbean trip last month and did not to drink any wine for several weeks. Just no taste for it. Back to normal now but I’ll probably lose the taste for it again as things heat up more here.

Oh yeah, forgot about that. newhere

All is going well, although my sleep patterns are still pretty messed-up — as in, not patterned at all. And I’ve already dipped my toe into the local beer some — that’s pretty easy to do around here, with a pub on nearly every corner, and usually a couple in between … finding a good wine shop on the other hand …

I wouldn’t say “blah” but, although I know I’ve had some wines that were really good, in the last two years I haven’t opened a bottle that really stayed with me. I think a lot of it comes with focusing more on wines that I like. So I haven’t had especially bad wines in the last couple of years, either.

For the first ten years or so that I really was in to wine, I tried lots of things from lots of regions, but at a certain point narrowed on the regions and producers that I really liked.

Yes indeed. I think it’s a simple function of my body telling me that I’ve had enough, which I certainly have in my life. Absence certainly makes the heart grow fonder on return. Regular consumption makes one take the wonders of wine seem sometimes too ordinary.

Dennis, I can only surmise you need:

  1. better friends
  2. better neighborhood
  3. sunny days

Come to NYC where it’s ALWAYS SUNNY.

Seriously though, when I get like that I try either a Bordeaux, Burgundy or like I just did this past week, a Chianti Reserva.
Bingo! I missed my regular ‘drop’ real quick!

Dennis,
We need to do a riesling dinner at Rowdy’s.

OK. Off topic.
How did you get this 6 pk?

It’s funny…many folks above have said “just drink beer for awhile”. But my “blah” periods usually relate to beer, not wine. I’ll get into stretches where I feel bloated after half a beer, or can drink a couple draft while unable to bear anything from a bottle. So I just hit my wine cellar harder in those times. I guess it’s nice we have beer and wine to balance against each other. Oh, and gin…yeahhh, gin!

The party at Rowdy’s during the auction would have snapped this funk hard- (You were missed!) Old Burgs, Old Ries, Barrel Samples, Moonshine, and Fried Chicken…

Or- We need to get you out here for a long weekend

Every summer about July I just switch to mostly cocktails. It maybe the heat (thought it is not that bad in Wa State) but I forget about wine until around October.

Yes!

Was so bummed to miss you and that event! Cant’ tell ya.
May get out your way soon.

Got some older Edmund St Johns. You inspired me Dennis. Bob Fleming brought an older one to a dinner one night.
Blew me away.
Let’s do that dinner soon.

Luckily I have not been in a wine funk lately, lots of good stuff (yeah, especially at the Dirty Rowdy Chicken Partay), but even some v inexpensive bottles lately have made me very happy - M Lapierre Raisins Gaulois (after a couple of bottles didn’t impress me, this one really sang for some reason), and the Botani moscatel seco too… not to mention opening up several bottles of Salinia wines and Tribute to Grace, great stuff…

Dennis, you’re just going through a dumb phase. You’ll emerge out of it soon into your prime drinking window, full of secondary and tertiary pleasure.

Dennis, I think it’s the Dead. You need to get the 1973 Rawhide n Chaps underground recording. Listen to that on auto-repeat, dude. Life as you know it will be slightly different.

It’s probably all that Burgundy you’ve been drinking lately.

Since you bought everything else… [cheers.gif]
