Every grape, every region? No. I have gone through stages where a particular grape or region has gone south for me. I generally just take a good deal of time “off” of that one.
Yes and then I start to wonder whether it is the wines or just me…or just maybe my choices. My conclusion is that it is most likely me but the exact mechanism that causes it is something I have not thought through.
When I was drinking primarily Washington wine nearly to the exclusion of everything else, this happened to me. It actually forced me to taste everything else out there, so I guess I’m grateful for it.
I’m there right now Dennis. Just this weekend I was thinking I could sell off 3/4 of my cellar and it wouldn’t even bother me. Bourbon, Scotch, and beer are doing it for me.
I can’t put my finger on it and don’t think it’s a long term thing, really.
Perhaps it’s a convergence of factors in the past few weeks: me, the company, the settings in which the wines were consumed, the specific wines, my expectations for the wines, other beverage options, etc…
I hear you Joe.
I know what you mean Dennis! I seam to go through them quite frequently. I thought that it was just because this is my career and I am thinking about wine all the time. I notice that it is usually because I get in stretches of only drinking domestic wines that are very scientifically made and sterile. So for getting out of those funky stages I try to reach for something from the old world and from way out in left field like a Gravner, Radikon, or some of the orange wines. Or maybe a wine from Jura. Try something you have never had before but you know is extremely different. Good luck and I hope you get out of this soon!
Happens often. Sometimes it’s a cold (like today), other times it’s a run of mediocre wines that for whatever reason don’t meet expectations (poor provenance and retailer overhype the biggest contributors here), and other times it’s a palate shift away from what I’ve been focused on.
In general, these are quickly passing phases for me!
I guess I’m not alone and it usually passes for me as well…for example…
I came home to the perfect remedy for my current ailment:
Today’s delivery: a 6-pack of well-aged Syrahs from the cellar of the genius that is Steve Edmunds.
I see brighter wine days ahead!
Thanks all for the comments. And cures (Champagne!)
Yep. Part of it is that I go through stretches where I just don’t want to bother concentrating on the wine so I don’t feel like opening anything good. Some if it is that there are times when I just don’t feel like drinking most of a half bottle and if I’m opening something decent, I decant half into a 375… which means I more ore less need to drink the other half. If I just want the equivalent of a glass I’ll often grab a beer instead.
What I wouldn’t do, unless it lasted a year or more, is sell wine. After going through a blah phase I inevitably pop something that just gets me going again and reminds me of why I like wine. Along the lines of Berry and Anthony’s thinking, if you are just finding the wines you have to be blah, try something offbeat. See For jaded palates - WINE TALK - WineBerserkers for a white suggestion from Fleming. Leaf through the Rosenthal or Dressner listings. Want a lighter red.? Try a Frappato from Sicily. etc. etc. This is where having a trusted wine shop locally is key - they can often direct you to something that you wouldn’t normally try.
