Opening a bottle of Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Selezione 2013 for tonight.
To be served in 7 hours.
On the nose the wine has this amazing deep black fruits.
Bramble, cassis and cherry, moving into more balsamic VA and cured meats.
Hint of pine resin palate feels thinner compared to the nose.
Doesn’t feel like oxidation to me more plums than raisins.
Could anyone help me with the labelling, as it says Selezione.
This was a bottle bought in Italy via a reliable merchant.
I have seen few posts but can’t put my finger on it.
@Levi_Dalton would know.
We’ve gone around on this several times. I thought I had it straight, but the Selezione stamp must be a new stamp. It’s not the circular stamp I’m used to seeing. I’m a Pepe fan boy, but the variety and inconsistency of labeling will make ya nuts.
When was the 2013 decanted/bottled? Any marking on cork?
Levi and @Oliver_McCrum will have more info.
Dear Dennis,
Apologies for being bit of a pain.
I went through all the threads, my only conclusion is that Italian wine industry is there to confuse you and knock out stellar wine.
In fairness I’m not a huge Pepe fan, think some other wineries do far better especially for current prices.
I will see later on what the result with the wine and will keep you posted on cork codes etc…
No need to apologize! I share the confusion and appreciate the dialog as I didn’t realize there was yet another stamp they are using. Cheers.
Emidio Pepep and Levi -couldn’t help but laugh- Levi brings Chiara to one of the regular tastings at my NYC home. Levi takes Chaira down to show her my cellar (which is somewhat modest by Berserker standards) and comes back up with a bottle of Rougeard. They were kind enough to leave the le Bourg and just grabbed a Poyeaux.
A billion years ago, when Rougeard wines were considerably cheaper than they are now.
I probably won’t be headed back to your house in the future, lest I do something that inadvertently prompts a weird public post on Wine Beserkers.
That response gave me a good chuckle, Levi!
Hi Levi. I was never my intent to cause you any pain or distress, which I have obviously done. My sincere apology for doing so. Be well
That’s true if somebody should apologise it’s the winery for confusing us.
All jokes aside, the wine went through many stages there were moments I loved it. Moments we felt it wasn’t right.
It went from opening at noon from plum dark high VA
To more wild strawberry flavours over time.
The VA toned down.
The wine itself was very leafy, I would say even too much.
It gained weight it lost weight. It was all over the place.
I have a few bottles left see how they evolve over time.
It felt more like a 3pax bottle than 2pax as we struggled to get through the whole wine after our dinner.
With food the wine was outstanding.
Rib eye, jersey royals wilted in wild garlic and white asparagus.
Picture of cork attached.
I don’t know what that ‘SELEZIONE’ label means, I’ve asked the winery and I’ll post their answer when I get it. All of our bottlings* have SELEZIONE VIGNE VECCHIE on the label.
- of Trebbiano and Montepulciano
Hi Oliver,
Thank you for your help really appreciated.
This could be a bottle which was meant for the Italian or EU market.
Looking forward to the reply.
I just saw Chiara in NYC last week. She was in town for events around their 60th anniversary.
I’m spending a couple days at Pepe’s in July- so if we don’t have answer by then I’ll ask Chiara and Sofia
The winery confirms that Selezione stamped on the label was their first way of saying Selezione Vigne Vecchie.
The document that the winery released discussing this is linked to from our Emidio Pepe page, if anyone is looking to geek out.
@Oliver_McCrum thank you
