Elkano

Elkano deserves its on thread. It really lived up to the hype. The food is delicious and portioned nicely (as opposed to some the places we have previously eaten at. How do the Spanish eat so much food?). The wine list is nice with a broad range including some gems. We opted for a 2023 Rodrigo Mendes Cies Albariño. Really lovely, somewhat elegant wine at a great bargain. I’m in the camp that will usually avoid tasting menus. That said, the tasting at Elkano seems to be the way to go. The service is what you would expect. From Angel the somm to the staff/runners, everyone was friendly and engaging. The server overhead my girl talking about coffee ice cream and brought her an extra scoop. The food is presented somewhat plainly but artfully. The utensils and plates are also pretty cool. Gabriel glas stems for those that care. There is a lot of food and the service is tailored to your desired pacing. Our lunch was 4 hours. Thanks for the beautiful write up and pictures. We love this place.

Interestingly, they told us they only started doing a tasting menu because international visitors are too confused about how to order a la carte, and it would take too long in the dining room, with tons of questions and no decisons

Thanks Sarah. I’m pretty sure our entire section was from the US. I did see a table of two that ordered a rather huge Rodaballo with a few starters. I should add that spending time in Getaria is worth it. Such a lovely town!

One of my trips, I intended to explore that general area instead of spending most of the days in SS; so, I based in Getaria instead of SS. Loved it. The parking situation not the best; but, quite manageable. I also like Kaia-Kaipe.

To each their own, but this is my preferred approach, with a bottle of sparkling or something white. Or both.

Sounds like you had a great meal. One of my favorites.
