Eating in paris with my 15 year old son.....and other related questions

I understand the OP’s position, but man, I would have loved to be his kid  Never left southern California until I was 16, never went on any kind of vacation, didn’t experience even medium “fine dining” until I was out of college. What I would have given to be taken to Paris and experience everything it has to offer, including food. My guess is that he’ll be a lot more open to foods in the heat of the experience :wine_glass:

Second the recommendation for airbnb or similar so as to have a kitchen; take advantage of the markets–most will offer take away as well as raw ingredients.

Montmartre has some good vintage shops along with its other sights. Try Kilo Shop and Chinemachine. And if your schedule allows it, head to Saint-Ouen for the “flea market” (it really is more than that).

Get your son involved in the choices. Would he be interested in walking tours or classes, or concerts or road trips? Hopefully he is interested enough in the trip to be able to make some choices. There are tours for just about every interest, I’d bet there’s even a tour for thrift shop lovers.

Vintage clothing shops are in every other street in the Marais.

Some names that my wife gave me;

Kilo Shop
Guerrisol
Tilt Vintage Paris

Also, just as Robert mentioned, burgers are pretty much staples when you see outdoor-displayed blackboard menus by most bistros these days. Also quite a bit of of burger-specific establishments all over Paris these days.

Italian pizzerias are all over the place, too. In Montorgueil and 7th around rue Cler.

The flea market at the Porte de Clignancourt is great for vintage stuff and your son would love the vibes I think. Open Friday-Sunday only.

If he is into sneakers there are lots of sneaker shops in the Marais. I would suggest staying there.

The lines to enter Supreme in the Marais are shorter than in the US, if there is a line at all.

Didn’t notice many sneaker shops, but noticed many thrift vintage stores.

for those that have posted or pm’d re thrift, he’s pretty high up on the fashion ie rick owens, virgil a,balenciaga and the like. (so those are the kind of places he’s looking for)
thank god he’s really a great kid and made some money this summer!
btw if anyone has a hot rod bmw m2 they’d like to donate he wants that too…
did i mention he’s a really good kid?

Turn him loose in Galeries Lafayette!!!

The Balenciaga boutique is great.

What very good taste and what a treat to get to explore Paris with him!

You didn’t say, in the first place, what exactly your son needs. Here are Paris vintage-thrift stores that he might enjoy:

Valois
Citizen Concept Store

Hotel: Wife and I stayed at Hotel Bel Ami in the 6th Arr last week. Excellent quiet yet central-enough location, modern touches, great staff, family-friendly.

so much thoughtful info here
thanks to all!

Great location and very nice hotel. Morning coffee at Le Deux Magots or Cafe de Flor? After staying all around Paris over the years, we’ve spent the last dozen years in this neighborhood.

Mark,

I have two daughters, 21 and 19. Both are very, very into the vintage fashion scene. Our most recent trip to Paris was just with our oldest, but she did very well at vintage stores in the 11er. Not sure of the names. Also, she got a bag for herself and a wallet for her sister at a very high end vintage store on Ile Saint Louis. Just looked it up, it’s called Opulence Luxury and Vintage Jean du Bellay (conveniently right next door to Pierre Herme). Having spent many hours following my wife and daughters in and out of these types of stores, my takeaway is that there are a LOT more deals to be had at the vintage stores in Paris, Florence, London (Europe in general) than in the USA. FWIW, my observation is based on women’s fashion and accessories. I have no idea how that translates to jeans or men’s fashion.

PS…another general takeaway regarding all these types of stores (or any clothing stores) would be that they would all be more successful if they had a place for me to sit while my crew shops.

If he is looking for those brands, it will be hard to find them in thrift stores. I think you are more looking for resale type stores, I do not know if those exist in Paris (In NYC the best one is Tokio 7).

I would take him to the Rick Owens store in Paris and to L’Eclaireur at 10 Rue Herold (there is no sign on the door just a buzzer)…they know me well : )

just for comparison there is a place called 2nd street just across howard st from rick owens.
he loves that store

Mark,

My kids go to second street wherever they find them (they are all over). I’ve been really unimpressed. The vintage stores my daughter went into in Paris were much more impressive.

thanks mike
he’s been to most if not all the 2nd streets in nyc, but only the howard st location has what he likes
not sure exactly why but i suppose it makes sense with the soho location
