Eating and Drinking in San Francisco

No, I cancelled this morning because of stomach issues. We went out to dinner last night and something didn’t agree with me.

How was it? Did they serve the roast duck? Pics?

Dang, sorry to hear that. No duck, Chicken. Was very enjoyable. Honestly would have been fine with the buffet options then dessert. Chicken was good, but too much food!

Yes, it’s Poulet Frites. Chicken, fries and a terrific mushroom/madeira sauce for the chicken. That’s the only main offered. If you’re not careful, you can easily fill up on the salads/charcuterie/pate! However, gotta leave room for the buckwheat doughnuts.

It’s kind of confusing because when I made the reservation, checked the reservation and cancelled the reservation, the menu showed roast duck, along with charcuterie, charred broccoli with squid and those doughnuts. I thought maybe they subbed duck for chicken this time. Either way it sounds great and we will try to make it in the near future.

I saw that as well, but I think that text is more a general reference to their normal menu, not the Poulet menu.

Oh nice, have a trip to NYC at that time and hope to hit Le Beau d’Or, which is among those participating (Wildair and Frenchette are too)

Did Liholiho Yacht Club recently.
Need reservation though they do have limited walk-in bar seating.

Definitely worth going, super yummy, delicious and varied…

For me, their house made potato chip/dip and halibut kinilaw was outstanding…
Really cool vibe…

Back in SF for the first time in many years. Anyone try Jules? I’ve already heard some good things. Walked by this evening and it smelled great. Place was already hopping at 6:00.

Yes, Jules is excellent. Not sure it’s worth how hard a seat is right now, but it’s very good.

It’s also on probably my favorite 3 blocks in the city right now, between Jules, Bar Jabroni, and Stoa.

Nice. It’s my old neighborhood from 30 years ago. Great to be back. Looks like lots of places to check out. Think I will get a pie to go from Jules.

Really liked Bar Jabroni.

Jules is definitely worth going to. Very crispy pie with a hint of sourness in the crust.

And Bar Jabroni is great as well. Food is excellent and the wine list is top notch.

I have a business dinner for 10 i have to schedule in early November. It’s a bit of a challenge managing the budget and spots with availability. All of my guests are German and would like to have them experience a bit of local SF/Cali flavor. State Bird has an alcove set up that seats 8 that they say you can fit 10. Anyone ever bring a group there ?

I took a look at Prospect and it looks a bit more like a traditional business dinner spot but the menu and wine list look like they could work and everyone can order ala carte. Anyone have any feedback ?

The Morris could also work but the menu is family style and a bit limited.

Yes I have done group dinners at State Bird many times and it is always a hit. You might also want to consider The Progress which is firing on all cylinders and has a slightly more private set up for 10. Of course I love both!

As Robert pointed out, you can do group dinners at State Bird, but the menu is also family style (just like the Morris). It’s very standard here these days, but I get that a group of Germans might prefer individual plates (my family is Austrian and it took some time for them to appreciate this)

Angler might be another good choice, but also family style.

Heirloom Cafe might work, they do individual plates. Or Cotogna.

I’d love to do State Bird but the Alcove table they reference for groups seat 8. They said you can fit 10 at the table but it could be tight. Looking online at their pics not sure 10 would fit. The menu and pricing do work for us though. @Robert_Dentice - what sized groups did you host ?

I did check with Cotogna as it looked like a great option but their F&B min was really high for 10 and past our budget. I’ll take a look at Angler and Heriloom. thanks !

We did 8 people last time and I agree it’s very tight with 10, especially for a business dinner. Not sure if they have other options…

One more restaurant to throw out there is Ernest. Really great Cali cuisine, but difficult reservation to get. Although their space should be able to accommodate larger groups.

Heirloom will certainly be able to handle you, it’s not as acclaimed as the others, but always a good meal. Cost there would probably be less than anywhere else you’re considering (but it’s also farther away from where you are likely staying). Progress is a good option, larger space, they should be able to seat 10 no problem. Cost a little higher.

I have done as many at 16 at State Bird. 16 is two tables of 8. Not sure how they would handle 10. The Progress might be better. I am sure they will work with you.

I will say it is getting harder and harder to do work dinners. No one drinks or eats
