Eating and Drinking in Los Angeles

Went to Ardor this past weekend - gorgeous space. The veggie dishes were very well done and the milk bread with tomato was to die for. Stemware there is top top notch.

Thanks Charlie, been eyeing the place!

Bavel is as good as ever. Server was really pushing the wine, to the point of instruction us not to order cocktails until the heavier entree courses. Wonder if this is to recoup revenues, as this has never been the case for the last 3 years (menu largely unchanged since then too).

My friends said seafood was good but the larger meat dishes were very salty

Four of us dined at Girl and the Goat. The space is beautiful. Our outside table was very comfortable. Service was outstanding including a fantastic sommelier. Food was very good with some really great dishes. Stand outs were the tomato salad, green beans, corn, shishitos, lamb kebab, salmon poke and the pork shank. We also had the whole branzino done Thai style. While the fish was excellent, a minor quibble was all the ingredients dressing the fish obscured the flavors of the branzino. We had the goat liver pate that were served with the most amazing crumpets. And let me not forget the popcorn ice cream which was amazing. Corkage is $35 with a two bottle limit. Secret deal: If you offer a glass to a neighboring table, they will waive one corkage. Pretty cool. We happened to be sitting next to chef Stephanie’s mother. She loved the ‘02 Max. Grunhauser Atbstberg Auslese (also opened ‘08 Chidaine Bouchet). We really liked the food. The flavors are bold, everything is sauced and often the results are terrific. If you byob, suggest wines that work with big flavors such as Chenin and Riesling. Will definitely return.

This was quite a treat and very nice to be able to enjoy at our own pace.

dang that looks pretty good!

We liked it a lot! Flavors popped and everything (proteins, vegetables, sauces, baked goods) kept the right texture. I think they have take and bake nailed down. I could see us doing it again.

What’s the Anajak Thai fried chicken like? Is it Thai flavored or spicy? Trying to decide what to pair it with.

not spicy - like normal thai fried chicken which is kinda like normal fried chicken.

I have been eyeing this menu. What level of reheating / cooking is required? Their Alinea cook at home menu was fun, but it was a frantic 3 hours of reheating, cooking, and eating. This looks more like plug and play / conventional takeout, which is what we want for this meal.

I thought it was straightforward. Everything was 20-25 min at 350. We decided to course it out and put the next one in as we served the current one. My sister decided to serve everything at once. I think one could also heat everything at once, cover, and use the residual heat or warming function of the oven and course things out.

The beignets turned out great reheated in the toaster.

great meal at n/naka. A couple pic.

Help! Need a place on Saturday with very good food, does not necessarily have to high end food but it could be, it can be casual for 12-14 people where we can bring wine. Preferably around DTLA but open to other suggestions.

maybe brera ristorante? They have a pretty big space and I don’t think they are packed on a Saturday.

Thanks. I will check it out.

I like Brera quite a bit (food, atmosphere, service, people watching) but have noticed that because of crew shortages, their wait times, even with reservations, are, uh, vivid. You might want to ask them how that situation is loooking these days - I was last there about 2 months ago.

Started diving in since my group will be there in less than a month.

Bicyclette corkage is $75. Definite pass!

Hatchett Hall is $30/first 2 and $40 for bottle 3+. Anajak is still $35. AOC is $35. Since it’s literally around the corner from our Airbnb, we’ll give it a try for dinner and see if it’s worth a return trip. It may end up being our go-to spot for grabbing a first-thing-in-the-morning bite. For all the other places mentioned above in our neighborhood, $30-35 is standard.

Still need to call Oste and Chez Marvin. Oste is open now, but doesn’t answer.

Has anyone tried Afuri on Mateo st? Heard great things, but nothing first hand.
