They already felt the need to issue a clarifying statement on their Instagram account, so they’re feeling something.
From a fiscal perspective, I could understand why the Manzkes might have entertained running the Tesla diner. They just had to close 3 of their 4 restaurants. If the deal terms are favorable, they could get a nice payout from running the Tesla diner without the liabilities of ownership…
That said, seeing any amount of backlash from one small comment might now deter them from that deal because they don’t want to risk the “guilty by association” reputation to their cash-cow Republique. Personally, I don’t think the risk/reward is in their favor.
I care. You should all see who his wife follows on Instagram to see just how truthful Walter’s initial statement was. I won’t be visiting anytime soon and I’m a very very loyal customer there.
Do you think enough people will actually know about the statement and even if they do, will enough people (and people who actually would go to Republique) actually care to an extent that would make them choose to avoid Republique?
I maybe straying into a political comment here, in which case no issue if this is deleted with no complaints but no apologies…
As a Brit (and Swiss through citizenship) who is a huge admirer of the USA I sincerely hope a restaurant owner who is supporting the wealthiest man in the world ideologically ripping up the US social fabric with no concern for the constitution I sincerely hope so. Looking from outside the US, this really is the saddest time in my 40+ years for what I really consider is the country that has on balance of good versus bad been the greatest country in history.
Thanks everyone so much for your responses to my post. We will go to Lawry’s , I really want the roast rib and my wife likes the look of Ocean Grill with the sea view.
Went to the classic Smoke House the other night for dinner with a few friends. Packed to the gills. The vibe and interior is great - just pure steakhouse Sinatramericana. Booths of red leather, dark wood, old men with cologne. But not like old men from hedge funds, rather old men that own car dealerships in midwest or a small chain of dry-cleaners. High out-of-town-just-visiting level.
Their signature orange bread arrived promptly (basically bread spray-coated with mac and cheese powder and grilled in an oven). As I have a weakness for junk food, I can’t deny it: I had more than one slice, but it came with a lot of guilt!
Steaks arrived and they were decent, it’s just that everything accompanying it isn’t that great or inspired, saggy broccoli, the sauces aren’t great (tried some bourbon sauce and it was like a packet out of a frozen tv-dinner), salads etc. The creamed spinach had a film o top of it from sitting too long under heat lamp and everything is kinda just plopped on your oval plate uninspiredly. You get the idea.
Had a decent Drouhin PN that was $80. And I cant believe I actually almost thought 80 bucks was cheap, that’s how out of whack pricing is.
Overall, Musso is much better in the battle of the classics, I have to admit. I would put this below Taylor’s as well. But if you go for the vibe and the margherita, it’s fine and fun.
My mom loves their Brunch and we grew up going there for Easter, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day.
We would also usually purchase the photos from the photographer.
We’re also going there for my mom’s Birthday in 2 weeks and their Sunday Brunch is $52 (non-Holiday’s). I like their food, but not sure it holds the best value for $52.
Soban is closed on Tuesdays, which is the evening we have free - a tough one, it seems. @CFu (or anyone else) is Crab House a good option if Soban isn’t a possibility? The rough geopgraphy and preferred cuisine aren’t set in stone, but the friend we’re meeting doesn’t want to travel far from her hotel.
If you’re only interested in the raw crab in K-town, I think Crab House is a good choice if Soban is closed. Otherwise, I would suggest, bite the bullet and drive out to SGV and go to Longo Seafood and get the snow crab. It’s exceptional and I heard they just lowered the $/lb significantly. Another option if you want cooked crab, is Water Grill downtown, where corkage is $0.
Thanks! Not attached to raw crab per se. We are packing sake so were looking to explore pairings with Korean food, and seafood especially. We eat a lot of snow crab in Japan, so don’t seek it out often at US prices.
They do allow corkage. I forget if it’s $75 or $100 (when I went 1.5 years ago). I think there’s a two-bottle limit. They also have an extensive wine list and they’ll email it to you if you ask (or they did when I asked).
Thanks, Jordan. I’ll send an email to ask for the list and to confirm corkage. We’re in town for most of the week, and have to allocate the bottles we sent out over a number meals, so it could make sense to order off the list.
