Eating and Drinking in Boston

I’m in Boston one week per month and while I’ve had great oysters and other seafood in Boston, I’ve had as good (or better) right here in CT where I live. This town is extraordinarily fortunate to have a commercial fishing port as well as locally farmed oysters, and you can purchase seafood directly from the boats or at the local seafood markets. Seafood doesn’t get much fresher than that.

Last time I was in Boston I had a great little meal at Haley.henry. Definitely worth a stop!

Haley Henry is fantastic. If you can get a lunch reservation, Krasi is also wonderful.

Has anyone been to Krasi lately and have recommendations from the wine list? Headed there Friday and was considering the Sant’Or Agiorgitiko if we go the lamb route or the Sclavos Robola if we focus on seafood.

Heading to Krasi on Thursday and have same request regarding wine recs.

We were visiting Boston in September and had really good meals at Mamma Maria, Tresca, Ma Maison (despite the pretentious guy sitting two tables down who really didn’t know that much about wine despite opening 3 $500+ bottles), and SRV.

Michelin finally got to Boston and Philly.

As I’d expect, there is one 1-star restaurant and several Bib Gourmands, which I think is a fair representation of the quality of Boston’s restaurants (good, not excellent). These were the restaurants getting these awards.

No deuxave is sort of surprising.

I have not been to any of these restaurants.

I’d actually be interested in Michelin’s reactions to the best places in Portland, ME, Providence, New Haven or near Mystic and Chester, CT, etc. Plus Hen of the Woods restaurant in VT, the Lost Kitchen in ME. I think these places can match the best in Boston, or more (though for the Lost Kitchen I’m mostly relying on its reputation, maybe it is mostly hype, so hard to tell).

I think New England collectively has some great food. I just don’t think it’s particularly centered in Boston itself, though of course there are very good restaurants there.

Funny - I had dinner at Bar Volpe Saturday night. Food was quite good, but service was quite rushed, even though it was unlikely they were going to turn the table after we sat at 7:30?
The sister restaurant, Fox and Knife, is quite good, but hard to get into given its size.

I have eaten at a few of the restaurants on this list and enjoyed my meals there. I’m particularly fond of Urban Hearth.

I enjoyed Fox and Knife, but only one visit.

Newly on WB, live nearby. My favorite 3 places to eat in Boston right now are Lê Madeline in Quincy, Tonino in Jamaica Plain & Brassica Kitchen which is also in JP. Re: the original post, I liked Somaek when I went, have been meaning to get back there. Otherwise I like weekend trips in NYC or Montreal to eat. Have also been looking for some more BYOB / corkage spots either in or outside the city if anyone has ideas.

Was at Row 34 for a work event this week. It was a set menu, many shared disbes, but there was nothing on offer I’d want to eat again, except maybe the raw oysters which were okay. How do you make both lobster and flank steak totally flavorless? Shrimp way overcooked. Fried oysters hard as rocks.

Unfortunately my last couple of experiences mirror yours. I think they have over expanded - they now have 5 or 6 locations, and the food has suffered as a result.

Finally ate this legendary dish @ Neptune this week - wow. Told them about the “tribute” at Smithereens in NYC, eager to try it next!

Despite the hype I’m not a fan of the lobster roll but between the raw bar & this you have the start of a great meal, plus some fun wines on the list.

What is it?

I’ve been to Neptune umpteen times, guess I’ve missed out.

Neptune “Johnnycake” - basically a savory pancake with honey butter, smoked bluefish, and caviar!

After posting I realized there was another post about it above! Let me know if you try it.

I have only been once, but Mooncusser was fun/different/delicious - hope to go back soon.
