I recently picked up some 2007 Mongeard-Mugneret, Domaine Grands Echezeaux Pinot Noir. What is the likely best drinking window for this wine? Thanks
I wouldn’t think of opening before 2017.
Good question Brian. I guess it depends how you like them. 07’s don’t have alot of structure and are pretty accessible now. This producer also tends to make wine in an approachable style. That being said this is Grand Cru and Burgs have a much longer life than people initially give them credit for. If you prefer tertiary flavor then I would think this could go 10 years at least.
I can’t recall off of the top of me head if it was the '07 Echezeaux or Grands-Echezeauz, but I had a bottle 6 months ago that was delicious–not at all over oaked like many young Mongeard-Mugneret wines can be. I prefer old burgs, but this bottle was all I had at the moment and I decided it would have to do. It will age, but my experience with '07 is that even the most ageworthy wines and grand crus are offering great pleasure now, and won’t last as long as the '05-'06 and '08-'09s.
Seems that Mongeard-Mugneret was pretty successful in 2007. Also seems they have a lighter touch and use a bit less oak lately. I’ve enjoyed many 06/07/08 bottles, haven’t had anything from 00-05, and have not really cared for the wines I’ve tasted from 99 and prior. I think they’re perhaps vaguely comparable to Arnoux or Grivot lately in terms of oakiness and flashiness vs freshness and clarity if not exactly the same styles. There have been some real bargains to be had as well of late.
Now or over the next year, then pack it away to drink somewhere between 12 and 25 (years!)…
