Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr auslese riesling 2005

In terms of when to drink, needless to say, there is a lot to be said for timing.

For me this wine was at a perfect point in its evolution last night, with my wife’s “Bang Bang” chicken.

An “old fashioned” auslese that could have easily been mistaken for a spatlese. The sweetness is receding, the richness remains. Secondary just beginning to emerge – mineral, petrol. Peach and pear and a lightly candied ginger (or is that the chicken dish?). But this one is really all about balance and mouthfeel. It might get more interesting in future decades, but it’s pretty damn good now.

One more in the cellar – yes! 95

The 2005 Urziger rocked! Always been a big fan of Loosen even the Dr. L for $10.00.

2005 Dr. Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (6/9/2013)
Worldwide Whites (Edina Country Club, MN): Last bottle and outstanding wine with peach, apricots, and slate. Medium to long finish and balanced. What an Auslese should be and should drink well for over a decade. (94 points)

Wonderful and rich wine with apricots, honey, slate, spices and melon. Medium finish and fine acidity levels. This should cellar nicely for a decade but why wait. (94 points)
