I started a thread about this a year ago, but we have not seen any progress since then. There is a company – Domaine Wine Storage – that says it is coming to DC but the date is unclear (I believe they made an appearance in the past thread…in any case their web site once stated that they were going to open in Summer 2011 and the date has been progressively moved until it now appears to be late 2012).
Domaine is offering storage in facilities in other cities until they open in DC. However I am reluctant to move my collection there without a better sense of whether they offer good service, or whether they are actually going to open in DC (they seem to have expanded rapidly and I suppose there is some chance of overexpansion). So I was wondering –
–has anyone stored with Domaine in other locations, particularly recently opened new locations?
–how have you found your service?
–does anyone have a sense for how they compare in service, resources, etc. to more long-standing East Coast providers like Morgan Manhattan, New York Wine Warehouse, etc.?
Private message Marc Lazar, he’s on the board, and his email may be attached to his account. They got in to NJ back in to December (took over LLK). Marc is a first class guy. I personally don’t use him for storage, but deal with him regularly for business, as many of my customers store with him, and I love working with him.
I’m currently using their NJ storage until I move into my house. Krissy Hoff was extremely helpful with my move and the storage arrangements. Nothing but first class in my opinion.
I tried to PM Marc awhile ago and it never got opened, best to go through their website.
I use Domaine in St. Louis. They are my only experience with off site storage, but I have been happy with them. My only complaint is that I don’t always get a notification when a package arrives and is moved to my locker. If I get a UPS notification that something has arrived and have not heard from Domaine about it, I email them and they will go to my locker to check. The St. Louis staff is very nice when I have had to call or email. The prices were the best of what I could find that was somewhat close to home and I don’t feel like I have sacrificed on storage conditions. I would love for them to open a branch in Nashville and will be renewing my contract in a few months, even though I know that the rate will be increasing.
I heard the same from Justin two weeks ago. I can’t wait. I have boxes piling up and the outrageous bill from David Gray is sitting on my desk staring at me.
You guys aren’t kidding – it’s going to be a thrill to have my babies in visiting distance! Not to mention that the facility will hopefully become a place for all of us wine freaks in DC to meet each other and plan off-lines.
When I first started out about ten years ago I lived in an old farmhouse that had a big passive cellar where I could just store everything I got…it was a lot of fun to go down there before dinner every night but it played total havoc with my capacity to let things age. There’s something to be said for off-site storage.
I’ve been a client with Domaine since they opened in Chicago. Currently I’m planning to close my account at the other two storage facilities I use and consolidate there. The service has been second to none. They handle all my shipping needs from CT. to CA. All done on in a refrigerated truck. They also handle all the international shipping recently importing 5 cases of wine I purchased in London. What they’ve saved me in shipping I can’t even imagine. They even have shipped out for me using UPS. A recent case that was shipped had a broken bottle. So instead of losing a whole case of Monte Bello the insurance covered the loss. and nothing was lost. A great facility in my opinion.
Marcus, thanks very much for your interest. I hear that you just spoke with my partner Justin and hope that he was able to answer all of your questions.
Over the past year we have spent considerable time and capitol to develop what we intend to be the premiere wine storage facility in DC. We very much look forward to sharing bottles with all of you DC collectors in the coming months. Thanks to all of you who have supported us over the past year and are sharing our excitement, and another thanks to all of our clients who have shared their experiences here.
We are building out our DC space and have to work within standard construction and permit boundaries. Please let us know if you would like to be included in our periodic updates and feel free to contact us with any questions. Thanks again, Marc
Yep, the last email from Krissy a few weeks ago said May, and she would keep me posted. Actually I just saw that Marc posted, so he’s definitely the authority on what’s going on
The quote for storage from David made me look elsewhere. And I also have a ton of wine waiting to move in when Domaine opens!
I am definitely hoping to use it as a meeting spot for some of my current wino friends, but would also love to get a Beserkers offsite going there at some point and meet more!
Me too! Although not sure all my wine will have arrived yet. But really looking forward to finally being in the same town as my collection!
The one worry is that I made the typical beginners mistake in collecting and almost all of my wine is 12 years old or less. So really I should send it all to a facility on the other side of the world that promises me to only return it in 5-10 years!
