Has anybody tried Domaine Huet Cuvée Constance 1989 Vouvray recently
I had about a year ago but it was corked! So upset
I have 3 bottles so I will let you know. I also have several 500ml bottles of Albert Boxler Tokay Pinot Gris VDT, Riesling SGN and Gewurztraminer VDT. All 1989
1989 Boxler Gewurz SGN last night was excellent. Had all the spice, texture and weight of Gewurztraminer, but it had this beautiful acidity that provided lift and elegance that was so different from most other Gewurz wines I’ve had in the past. Lovely stuff.
Yeah, I heard 1989 Huets have an above average cork-taint rate. Brilliant when on, though.
The taint rate on 1989 Huet is way above average in my experience. For example, at a tasting of six 1989 Huets several years ago, two were corked including the Cuvée Constance.
Ugh, that’s unfortunate. I remember some of the WD NYC crew had an '89 Loire tasting a couple of years back and a couple of their '89 Huets and Pinons were cork tainted as well. It’s a bummer considering how good '89s can be.
It keeps me from backfilling too much (though I am willing to pick up a bottle or two if the price is right).
Looks like about 10-11% corked rate on CT TNs for the 1989 Constance. Plus a few notes of advanced age from 375s. But the majority sing its praises. I’d expect a good bottle to be terrific.
The '89 Cuvee Constance is a monumental wine and one of my all-time favorites. However, as other’s have mentioned, they, as well as other Loire producers, got bad corks that year. My personal experience with the '89 Constance and all '89s from Huet, for that matter, is about a 35% cork taint rate. A shame as it was a magical vintage.
It’s a great wine. Just not as great as the '89 Début Pressée. ![]()
