I had a VR villages a few years back and remember it was good if not too slick and styled. I picked up a bottle of 2010 Clos d’Euginie on Friday for further investigation.
I reckoned it’s best to have a reference when you’re doing an evaluation so I cracked a bottle of Bachelet’s CdN from the same year to drink side by side.
Slow oxed for 4 hours.
The Clos d’Eugenie is a very well made wine. It has a nice spine of acidity, it isn’t over extracted, it is nicely balanced. There is just a hint of bitter at the end that is oak related. The new oak doesn’t stand out in this wine, it’s well integrated into the nose, but it leaves a trailing bitterness on the finish that is menacing .
There is a lot to like about this wine, good character, well structured and all of the vosne elegance and spice. But the bitterness of the new oak is annoying. I don’t think the wine is over oaked but I do think the choice of oak could have been better…
I wouldn’t buy this particular wine again but I am interested in following the development of this domaine. They’re headed in the right direction and, given the raw materials they’re working with, they’ll be a fabulous domaine if they get all of the variables right.
Anyone else have thoughts / insights on this domaine?
edited to correct spelling of domaine name + name of the parcel.
