I just discovered an ‘06 Clos de Bèze from this Domaine that came in a larger purchase, and realized I had never drunk the wine or read anything about it, which is strange for an owner in such a famous terroir. Anything interesting to be noted about their obscurity?
A very timely post, I had an 18 Bart Marsannay Les Finottes tonight. I did not like it at all; it was too much a product of the vintage, heavy handed and dull.
They improved a lot but not in 2018… a bit of a miss. They are from the Clair Dau family (Bruno Clair cousins).
Give the 18s time… they may improve…with time.
I have been buying for years for a reason…
Les champs Salomon is always excellent… but all are very good.
If you want to learn something about Marsannay, Domaine Bart is certainly one place to do so. I am not sure how many Marsannay lieux-dits they make, 6?, 8?. I always feel I am seeing new ones. They used to be under $25 each, which was nice. In addition to Beze, they bottle a Bonnes Mares. I have some, but haven’t drunk mine yet. Their Bourgogne is also quite good. I haven’t had their rose.
Last year I had the 2015 Marsannay Les Echezots ($27) the Saint Jacques ($25) and both were beautiful with everything I could ask for in a young Burg with a preference for the Echezots. From the same vintage the Champs Solomon ($35) was a bit closed and needed more time. Based on this sample, I purchased both 2018s and 2019s but haven’t tried them yet.
Their Clos de Beze plot is 13-14000 vine density, quite high density. The 2011 was very refined and not rustic … but I have not touched any other vintages so cannot carry judgment. I get 1 CDB every year (2 BM, …).
I had one very lovely Bart-Marsannay in a restaurant in Fixin that really sung, so 2011 seems to be a fine vintage for Bart. My CdBs were older, 1995 to 2006
Revisited the 2015 Champs Solomon Marsannay yesterday and tonight. While good on day 1, I couldn’t help but think it was too young although it was very nice. Day 2 was something altogether different, just delicious pinot fruit with tons of pleasure, even a wine to ponder over. 4- (out of 5).
I’m curious if people perceive an increase in quality over the last two decades. I drank some of these in the early 2000s (mostly 99s, as I recall) and I recall thinking that they were somewhat overoaked and without a lot character or depth.
