Sooo, Moved to jersey where there are no costcos that sell wine (around my area). Best price locally is 179… I look on winesearcher and the best I am seeing is 160 before shipping…
Is the sub $150 days gone? Is it time to stock up at the 175 range?
The real question is which are not? the sheer quantity of Dom Perignon has kept the inflation a bit slower than many others, especially those where the 2008 vintage restated prices higher, either intentionally (e.g. Taittinger CDC, Salon) or had this imposed upon them by the market (e.g. Selosse).
yeah, pricing really going up. Woodland Hills had 08 Taittinger for $125 and the next price was $180 and beyond. Nothing like that $125 price. And Dom 12 at $180 is about the best. Haven’t seen the $150 level and doubt we will. Grand marque champagne has made the next price leap.
Dom has always been a special occasion wine for me, but I think now with prices typically $50 more per bottle I’ll end up consuming more 1er cru champagnes annually and just do Dom maybe once a year or if there is a special restaurant event.
I agree the price increase has been rapid, but likely overdue. Champagne was way behind the Burg inflation for years. CdC certainly served as a catapult to reset the market, but honestly what isn’t up 30-50% in the past couple of years? Inflation across the board is here to stay for quite a while I believe.
I’ve had some pretty disappointing mid level burgundies recently. Right now cru Beaujolais is winning my heart even if they were priced the same as mid level burgs.
