Curious how people here feel about them, does engraving make a wine feel more special, or does it take away from the bottle itself?

If it is a bad bottle it will help you remember who gave it to you.
It provides a better grip on the bottle

It allows a tiny bit more intense light to penetrait
It requires you find someone with your name to regift it.
It made someone spend mo money and help our economy by giving an engraver work,
