Generally I do, but this company wants to charge me 1.5% of a fairly high value. So curious whether you do pay, and what is acceptable?
I pay sometimes but frankly I don’t understand the usual “buyer takes risk.” Seller should package so that it reaches buyer safely and seller should take risk—like in other products that are shipped.
agreed - i find it odd. Only 1-2 retailers ask it but it really should be part of the internal risk
When we send caviar we insure it, we don’t ask the client to pay 1% cost of the total package.
I think sometimes those vendors aren’t legally allowed to send to states but do it anyways
Never, I have my own insurance that covers transport.
I am absolutely not implying you’ve ever done this, and so the question isn’t directed at you Andrew, but I’d be curious to know how that coverage works in the event the shipment wasn’t legal (seller didn’t have license to ship to a given state).
You are covered for the loss of the wine. They never asked anything about who shipped it or if they were licensed or whatever during my only claim.
When I ship wines to the US from Burgundy, I do so using Cote d’Or Imports. Apparently, they charge 4.5% for insurance as part of their shipping fee. How To Group Prices Order Form 2023 (squarespace.com) But, I don’t have to pay VAT and I usually save more money on VAT than I spend on shipping and insurance.
Given the option, always.
What he said. @LMD_Ermitano
I choose insurance when offered. When its not, on a valuable case, I generally ask if I can pay extra to insure. I also pay for 2-3 day air on Fedex.
Things always seem to arrive better on the more priority shipments. They pay closer attention. The extra cost is worth it to me.
When you ship by regular ground, your wine cases are lost in the herd of all the other minimum-cost shipments.
My cellar insurance covers this. FYI I just purchased a piece of art from the UK and have to pay 3% for insurance.
An option with Zachys. 1% of the purchase price
So I pay 0.45% for my policy that covers storage and transport, so they are essentially pocketing the other 0.55% on that deal.
I’m a seller. We insure pretty much all shipments.
I always get it because I’m confident the first time I don’t is when I’ll get a shattered shipment.
Agreed. I choose same or next day delivery.
I have a similar policy to Andrew’s. Includes worldwide coverage, including when wines are in transit.
But for some reason I haven’t felt comfortable shipping wines from the UK to USA without freight insurance. Freight insurance is expensive at 1.25%.
At 1% and given the option I generally do, really wonder what would happen if fedex or ups delivery arrived damaged - has anyone been made whole without paying the insurance up charge (by shipping co and not vendor)?
Any time I see the ask for additional insurance, I automatically assume it means the seller will deny any claim for breakage without it.
I have never had a wine damaged in shipping that wasn’t replaced by the seller although I buy little to no party wine.
