Just curious. I see all these threads about New Year’s Eve Champagne, so i was wondering what people meant by that.
The times I’ve had a good Champagne set aside for midnight, we’re either (a) tired and barely hanging on, or (b) out partying hard (the ratio skewing heavily towards (a) as my years advance). In either case, opening a Krug or Dom or something would be a total waste.
What do most of y’all do with the Champagne you are picking out for NYE?
I’m just thinking as I type this, maybe the thing to do is to have a good bottle earlier in the evening, but leave enough in the bottle for one small toast at midnight.
We have about a 50/50 chance of staying awake until midnight, so we do the above, except that we usually have others with us for dinner, and more than one bottle will have been opened.
A couple of years ago we walked the few blocks over the crest of Capitol Hill to watch the fireworks at the Space Needle.
We brought the Champagne and poured some for a few of the others standing around.
In Denmark, the queen has a new years eve speech (live by the way) each year broadcasted early in the evening, and it is customary to listen to that while having a glass of bubbles. This is before dinner so that is a good time to bring out the good champagne. This year, we will have another couple to our house for dinner, but both my wife and them are pregnant, so it is only going to be two people drinking so will only have one bottle of champagne open at the speech and then saving some for the toast at midnight.
One of us doesn’t usually make it to midnight so, out of consideration for her, we usually open the champagne on New Year’s Day…typically at lunchtime, with a bunch of fun hors d’oeuvres.
