Occasionally I find some bottles I’m interested in that are for sale at Acker. The counterfeit scandals really gave me pause however. How about you folks, are you still buying wine from this retailer?
No
No, and never will.
No and never will.
Done. Over and out.
Hell no.
I did a couple times. Until the Rudy stuff. Never again.
Not a chance.
I’ve bought from them in the past when the prices were right, and I liked their service. I’ve cut back on buying from all sources, so I haven’t really singled Acker out, but of course I’m aware of their issues during the Rudy years and that does give me pause. I can’t say that I’d never buy from them again; at the level at which I play, I don’t think I’d run much risk of buying a fraudulent bottle, and in general I’m willing to give people a second chance.
Lately, though, most of their email alerts are for wines priced out of my comfort zone so it’s a bit of a moot point.
Never have, never will.
I had in the past but no longer.
Who?
previously, yes, but no longer.
Their emails do offer a fascinating glimpse into what must be the lives of the top 0.1%.
Or the top 0.01%.
I wonder if even F Scott Fitzgerald would have envisioned how bad things would become.
Probably not, because the currency was still pegged to gold back then.
Frank in the case of Acker it is not a second chance more like a fourth or fifth chance. But hey i admire your optimism and cheery outlook, like Chris Blum. You guys counteract guys like me.
Andrew
It’s not so much that I think I’ll probably buy from them again, but rather that I haven’t given it enough thought that I’ve vowed that I’ll never, ever buy from them again. I’m fully aware of the stain on their reputation, but at a remove; that world feels very distant from the one I inhabit.
I live within walking distance and occasionally (about once a year) stop in. On principle, I don’t want to do business there. Happily, that’s made easy by their prices.
I think there are lots of principled reasons, but if your concern is that you are likely to encounter a counterfeit, I’d suspect that the risk is lower now precisely because of all of the scrutiny of late.
Charles – Did you mean in the auctions or in the retail store?
Does it truly matter? The management that enabled Rudy is the same whether it’s retail or auction. Never. Again.
